A pounding overnight storm dumped 1 to 3 inches of rain across Southern California but caused no major damage. Forecasters, however, said to brace for the likelihood of more extreme weather later today, including thunderstorms, flash floods and small tornadoes along the coast.
"We're not done yet," said National Weather Service specialist Stuart Seto.Cold, unstable weather had already moved into the Santa Barbara area this morning and was expected to reach Los Angeles and Orange counties this afternoon, dropping another inch or more of rain and creating the potential for water spouts and small tornadoes. Wind gusts of 30 to 50 miles per hour were forecast.
Temperatures were dropping in Southern California mountains, and an additional 10 to 20 inches of snow could fall in the higher elevations later today and tonight, Seto said. Avalanches in recent days have claimed three lives in the mountains near Wrightwood.
