Paulson warns Senate: Pass stimulus plan now
Treasury chief says failure to act quickly risks wrath of frustrated public

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22868722/

WASHINGTON - President Bush’s chief negotiator on an economic aid deal said Sunday the Senate should quickly get behind a plan or risk drawing the resentment of a frustrated public.

The president and House leaders have agreed on a proposal to provide tax rebate checks to 117 million families and give businesses $50 billion in incentives to invest in new plants and equipment. The goal is to help head off a recession and boost consumer confidence.

“I don’t think the Senate is going to want to derail that deal,” Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said. “And I don’t think the American people are going to have much patience for anything that would slow down the process.”
But many senators say they are entitled to their ideas and that they never agreed to be deferential to the House and the White House on the final terms. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., agreed that the negotiations should move through the House first, but he and other senators still want to have input.

The Senate is considering adding such elements as extending unemployment benefits for workers whose benefits have run out, boosting home heating subsidies, raising food stamp benefits and approving money for public works projects.

2. Since it's going to take the IRS 6 months to actually begin making the payments...
Perhaps that time could be used to make sure the bill is properly written, no loopholes, nobody falling through the cracks, etc.

There could actually be a debate, and it could be thoroughly understood.

Or, we could rush it and not notice the fine print...

4. Vote NAY -- The money doesn't help much, and I'd almost love to see what
would happen if it weren't passed - if people weren't pacified by this band-aid. Maybe they would be forced to take some immediate, emergency REAL measures to help us out.

8. The worst part is that they treat the Bushies like they had a 99% approval rating
when they have a 25-30% approval rating.

Problem is, I think, the Bushies have a 99% approval rating from the media toadies and the cocktail party circuit and The Mighty Wurlitzer, and that's all the Dems can see from inside the False Reality Bubble.

Or perhaps the Bushies have a 99% approval rating from Big Corp. and We the People just don;t matter a whole lot.

Something like that. In either case, it's the same sad old song. And I simply cannot for a moment believe that it will come out any other way then as you say until I see differently.

But you and I know it's a done deal already. If anyone dares to try to speak up for the American People, Harry Reid will put them right in their place.

9. Just sent my comments on this to my MD Senators
and Congressman and to Pelosi and Reid and I invite DU to do the same. I told them I can see extending unemployment, but not to send out a check to every taxpayer because the people who lost their jobs several years ago and can't find a job will not get anything. Also, the last scam check Bush sent out personally for my family amounted to nothing as we had to send all but $80 back in. I told them to divorce themselves from Bush and only approve a package for emergency items such as unemployment, health care, food, emergency housing, but nothing to business at all. Bush already gave them big bucks and what did they do, but lay people off and the Banks charged predatory interest rates.

MORE business tax cuts..
... when will these people realize that this is a DEMAND SIDE problem not a SUPPLY SIDE one. Businesses invest money when they can make money doing so, not when the money comes cheaper.

The DEMAND in this country is drying up for many reasons, none of them having anything to do with business tax rates.

This sort of thinking and policy is EXACTLY what got us here and now these rubes want to apply more. It's pathetic, the House leadership should have told Bush to PACK SAND and so should the senate, but they won't, you can bet on that.

15. Seven plu syears of this Bushit and Paulson wants to
find a scapegoat in Congress. Money for infrastructure better be included. Giving people money to buy Chinese goods does not help the US economy.
