Dikembe Mutombo and the millionaire baby skank?
Chimpy turned the SOTU address into a commercial last night, fitting considering the fascist country we live in.

Welcome to the delusional ownership society!

I called her a skank for performing for the monkey boy, she's probably a really nice torture-supporting Bushbot.

13. Thank You! Things like that SO de-legitimizes any valid concerns
we might have with a subject. At this point, I'm beginning to think there are active rhetorical strategists out here on the internet, whose primary mission IS to de-legitimize our issues from within by making personal insults habitual.

28. That is your opinion. Based on . . . ?
Words like skank leave a trace alright. Poison.

Let's all just go around insulting anyone each of us has somekind of prejudice against and see what that adds up to. It's pathetic and childish, just very much like high school in-fighting amongst various cliques.

It places one's personal issues way, way ahead of our shared goals.

27. There are some words that women (in general) are disgusted by.
Some of them would include, but are not limited to, bitch, cunt and skank. There are words used to vilify women as dirty objects for men's pleasure or that a woman is loose and cheap with herself and that by having premarital sex, she is therefore unclean and unworthy.

Just keep this in mind for future reference. Thanks. :hi:

2. Maybe you could be more specific...
Why is Mutumbo a bad guy?

Why is the original developer of Baby Einstein a "skank"?

I, too, find Bush's desire to call out people in the audience a real eye-roller, but not because the people in question are bad or evil or whatever.

20. You need to get a grip on reality and/or meds.
Being recognized by any president of the United States at a SOTU is a high honor, and does not even remotely equal an endorsement of that president's policies. Do you think that subway hero guy is also a Bush automaton?

Read the FIRST thing about Dikembe Mutombo. He is a genuine humanitarian, and you trying to drag him though the mud is disgraceful.

Get a grip. Are you seriously that simple-minded? That everything said by someone who points out a fact (which you apparently wish weren't true) is automatically 'de-legitimized'?

You may need to look into some therapy.

26. What got me was the "anyone can get rich" bit.
I am glad that Mutombo is doing such good things with the (excessive) money he makes as a bb star. (more on athletes making too much later in another thread). What got me were a couple things. First the bit where he came to the USA to get educated as a doctor but instead, being tall and black, heh heh heh, the coach took 1 look at him and said "you play bb!" smirk, giggle, wink wink wink. This seemed insulting to me.

Secondly was the implication that anyone can do well, so long as they really try. I mean look at these people. A woman making movies in her basement when her child was young and an African man who wanted to be a doctor but was lucky enough to be tall and could make lots of money playing pro b.b. So, the only reason I am in the state I am in is because I haven't applied myself.

Much kudos to Mr. Mutombo for figuring out that making loads of money was a good thing because of what he could, and has done, with it. Very good and many thanks. Bah to Mr.bush for his giggles, his insinuations, his general smarminess.

35. Yes, that is true.
But I just wonder what his mind could have been used for in the practice of medicine instead of the bouncing of a ball.

Hey, I can't blame him. If I saw the opportunity to make millions of dollars, I'd be likely to jump at it, too. And perhaps after basketball, he'll return to med school. I just wonder what genius we lost in the field of medicine. And I mean that in all sincerity, not in a snarky, sarcastic tone.

38. I know and wonder "what if" but the problem was HOW he was presented
Not about him in particular, though it was really neat to hear about someone who is doing such good things. What got me was the giggle/wink/nod about "the coach took 1 look at him" and him being held up as "see! anyone can do anything, if they really try!" attitude. It was the smarminess of the smarmer that smarmed me.

I did not know that, however, my point was not about that. It was about what he might have accomplished as a doctor, not just a donor. I'm not against basketball, him playing basketball or anything he has personally done. It was just a random observation. The world could use dedicated doctors. As he is a humanitarian, I wonder what he could have done as a medically trained doctor to help people.

Edited to add: I try to be very straightforward in my posts. I wasn't hinting at anything in particular. There is just such a need for doctors, especially those with the calling to be humanitarians. Doctors Without Boardres could always use more trained medical experts!

45. I'm willing to bet he's able to help far more people this way.
One doctor can only treat so many people in a lifetime, but Mr. Mutombo's contribution's to the Congo will probably affect tens of thousands and last for generations.

I guess I'm just puzzled by the "sure he did X, but he could have done Y" argument.

46. Really, you've put far more thought into my throw away little post than I did.
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 03:34 PM by Kerrytravelers
It's really that simple. When I first wrote it, I did not know he had donated the funds to build a hospital. * might have said it last night, but I was not paying full attention to his speech to begin with. I know it now. I'm not that into basketball, so I don't know much about the players. Really, it's that simple.

Now, if you really want to get into a debatable subject: I wonder who staffs this hospital. I'm sure it is out of his hands as he is a donor for the construction. If the company that staffs it is honest, then it will be great. If they are anything like the set-up explored in The Constant Gardner, that would be frightening. But this discussion is a totally different thread for a different day. ;)

29. Is the name calling without facts really necessary??
Both of these people have done very good deeds. To villify both of them just because they were recognized at the SOTU is just being petty and ridiculous. President Clinton also recognized notable Americans at his SOTUs. This tradition was started by Ronald Reagan (I think) and I think its a good one.

I'm very curious as to why you just singled out these two: what about the subway hero or the soldier from Kentucky? Are they somehow less deserving of praise because Chimpy recognized them???

If we take your already irrational rant out a bit, go back to 1985. Ronald Reagan awarded the Medal of Freedom to Clara Hale. Mrs. Hale was an African-American social worker who served some of the poorest neighborhoods in NYC. She opened Hale House in Harlem, which cared for crack babies at a time when no one cared to. Hale House served over 1,000 of these infants and helped many of their mothers get treatment. Gee, since a Republican president chose to honor her she must have been a real "skank".

That way, you'll have more time to sit at home and feel morally superior.

And I have a question: how precisely is recognizing a man that has donated tens of millions of dollars and thousands of hours to improve the lives of countless people demonstrative of a "fascist" country?
