WASHINGTON – While the military "quagmire" in Iraq was said to tip the scales of power in the U.S. midterm elections, most Americans have no idea more of their fellow citizens – men, women and children – were murdered this year by illegal aliens than the combined death toll of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan since those military campaigns began.

Though no federal statistics are kept on murders or any other crimes committed by illegal aliens, a number of groups have produced estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent research.

Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. If those numbers are correct, it translates to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. That's 21,900 since Sept. 11, 2001.

IMHO this probably includes car accidents and other non-real "murder" deaths.

Second, I wouldn't trust statistics released by a Republican if they were cosigned by Christ Himself. Third, no mention appears to be made of what proportion of "illegal" aliens commit the murders, or how that number compares to figures for good old American-on-American murders.

I'll bet they also conflate murders within the 'illegal' communities (internecine killing is always more common than killings outside of communities), due to poverty, overcrowding, poor opportunities and the social tensions that living in such conditions generate. They probably include accidental or negligent deaths too (lots of accidents happen on those poorly supervised factory farms). I wonder how many illegal abortions carried out by desperate teenagers denied adequate healthcare are counted (the "illegal" mother killing her "American" baby.)

This looks like the usual scaremonger reporting, full of half-facts, woolly thinking and a crystal clear undercurrent of racism.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service estimates that there were 7 million illegal aliens living in the US in January 2000, and 3.5 million in 1990. Assuming the same rate of growth since 2000, the illegal population would be about 12 million.

The annual US murder rate in 2005 was 5.6 per 100,000. Logic suggests there are about 672 people killed in the US each year by illegal aliens. (120 x 5.6 = 672). The number of Americans killed would be fewer than this, since some of the victims would surely have been other illegal aliens. With this qualification, let's say 672.

It can be reasonably argued that illegal aliens are more likely to commit murder, because most are impoverished. And it is also possible that drug smuggling and other illegal activities might increase the murder rate for this segment. But 6.5 times the average murder rate?

I don't think so.

I did a little research on California's supposed illegal crime wave. The only ethnic minority that is disproportionately represented in California prisons is blacks. Hispanics (not broken down by citizenship) represented a slightly higher tendency to be imprisoned than whites, but not a lot higher. Blacks were several times likelier than either group. Of course, you don't want to put that out, or the Klansmen will rejoice.

There are, what, 20,000 murders in the U.S. each year? And at the highest estimate, what, 10 million illegals, or 3 percent of the population? So they're committing murder at seven times the rate of U.S. citizens? Suuuuuuure they are.

In one study of a sample 55,000 illegal immigrants serving prison sentences in the U.S., it was discovered that they are responsible for over 400,000 arrests and over 700,000 felony crimes.

According to Heather McDonald of the Manhattan Institute, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.

You don't know how many illegal aliens are in the US and nobody wants to touch the subject. So it's impossible to
collect accurate data.

If you ignore a problem you don't have to deal with the cause.

Aren't most murders between family members?

How many people throughout history had died because of Kings? Don't die for King George.

Meaningless statistic (at least for their purposes) without that comparison.

Also, chances are, that illegal aliens mostly when they murder, kill other illegal aliens. There's no statistic identifying the victims.

Just more RW BS trying to imply that violating the immigration laws is a sin so terrible it leads to all other crimes. Sort of like the one where you try marijuana, and you end up a heroin addict.

The report, "Creating the Minutemen," is based on an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) analysis of 581 articles and editorials printed in major U.S. newspapers between January 2005 and February 2006. The ACLU has been highly critical of the Minutemen, and ACLU volunteers closely monitored the group.

The first of those articles, "Volunteers Set to Monitor Border Crossings," by Jerry Seper of the hard-right Washington Times, reported that 240 volunteers had signed up. By early March, Seper was reporting that the number of volunteers had "more than tripled," came from every state, and included 16 pilots with aircraft.

During the last two weeks of March 2005, the media hype shifted into overdrive. Fifteen journalists reported the Minuteman Project had signed up "at least 1,000 volunteers." The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin ran a March 23, 2005, article headlined "2,000 volunteers expected for Minuteman Project."
