What is Joe Lieberman the champion of?
Does someone know what democratic issue Joe Lieberman has been the leader of? Of course we all know that he is supporting of the war. There must be some reason that he has been able to rise in the democratic establishment. What is it?

On social issues, basically pretty liberal. But actually a leader in the environment. I give him credit. The hard line/AIPAC stuff i could do without.

4. The honest non-snide answer would be: Israel
Relations with Israel. Yet as a Jew I can't even agree with him on that one. And with the events in Gaza the last few weeks it's almost as embarrassing to be a Jew as it's been to be a DU'er lately.

8. Affirmative action, workers' rights.
He's been a major good guy on both of those.

Pity he's such a bottomfeeding scumsucker elsewhere.

11. Well he's been around for a long time
I suspect that's more the source of any power he has. Also he is the one vote difference giving Reid the majority leader status, so they can't afford to chuck him over just now.

14. Most of the time
he votes with the RePukes, his contribution to the Dem Majority is very little if anything.

17. Not from their perspective - the Majority Leader and the heads of the committees
do wield procedural power, which they wield whether or not Lieberman actually votes with the majority or not.

13. The war in Iraq
He's let himself be completely turned around by one issue and be defined by it. That one issue will mark him for the rest of his life. Today he said he's officially going to campaign for John McCain to win. Can you imagine that? I'm betting it's uniquely due to one issue, the Middle East and his belief that the US needs to continue throwing its weight around with Iraq and with Iran. He's one of the biggest champions for continued war and killing.
