13. Refutes the Media Spin on Insignificance of Florida
So what changed between South Carolina and now? Oh, I got it a million and a half democrats voted in a "meaningless" beauty contest and Edwards came in a distant third in a state that's extremely representative of the democratic electorate. That helped Edwards see the writing on the wall.

Oh, but I forgot, those 1.5 million voting democrats don't really count for anything whatsoever.

Except now we'll hear from the media how good Florida turned out to be for Obama, since they will spin that the Edwards vote will all go to Obama -- although I think there's no evidence for that, especially since Edwards voters are more downscale than Obama's core voters and Clinton has been doing better with more downscale voters.

15. The Mountain Got Too Hard To Climb
I'm sorry to see Senator Edwards drop out, but this shouldn't be a surprise. He gambled on winning Iowa and using that to be a player...it didn't pan out. He didn't anticipate the strong showing and organization Obama put together and he sees the handwriting on the wall. To compete in Super Tuesday, he'd need to buy TV time in the largest markets and jet from coast to coast in hopes of winning maybe one primary or picking up delegates in states without winner-take-all rules. The expense just isn't worth the investment...especially since his fund raising has been a problem for a while.

Senator Edwards leaves the race with his head held high. He brought and will continue to speak about issues other candidates were forced to address and I hope whomever is the nominee brings him onboard in the GE and then in a future Democratic administation.

I feel like it's down to a choice between Candidate A and Candidate A, with the winner going on to meet Candidate A in the General election.

I think I'm about done with politics altogether at this point. We're screwed no matter how you slice it.

38. My guess would be he has realized now that there is a presumptive Repig nomminee...
...it is best for the Democrats to get our nominee nailed down so that person can go into full attack mode on the Repig nominee and quit tearing each other down.

He is doing it for the party and country. He realizes how important this election is to us all.

42. Probably because he realized that there are just too many states
and he's only one person...and all the concentrated campaigning in single states had not "done it" for him..

I admire him for not continuing to struggle.

It's just not his time yet.. He's still young, and I really can see him as Attorney Gerneral or in a different cabinet position..

and cynic that I am, I still feel that many people who really loved him, may not have been able to see him as President, BECAUSE of Elizabeth's health.. NO ONE wanted to have a First Lady who was desperately ill.. ( I know they say she is "doing great", but haven't we ALL had friends & family who had cancer, and for a time, they did "great" too..only to lose in the end:cry:..)

"I think he may have decided that it was just "time" to pull the plug and enjoy his life for a while...and remember too that he's going to align with someone, and that all HIS votes were decidedly from true believers, and those votes will now go to one of the remaining candidates and make them stronger.. The other two are very different from each other, so I doubt that his votes would split "evenly"..

It's gonna get interesting..very soon

43. I'm 41 years old
and have been following politics, thanks to my mother, since I was QUITE wee...and I have to say that we're missing out on the best candidate with the best message we've had in a long time, excepting Al Gore from the picture, who, as we know, should be finishing his second term right now, with no hint of war with Iraq, 9/11, tax cuts for the rich, etc....I understand that there are two more 'powerful' (shall we say) candidates, but I hoped that JE would at least have a big say in the platform. Maybe he will, who knows...

53. I am heartbroken but will not give up on my country.
I am sitting at my desk in shock and sadness right now. I have been an Edwards supporter since 2003. When he speaks, he always speaks for me. He has given me hope and a reason to believe in the goodness and possibilities of this country.

However, I will not get angry and abandon the party. I will not stand by and allow the Republicans to continue their reign of terror. The Obama/Clinton hate and arguments need to stop now. Support your candidate but please think about what happens when one WILL be our candidate for the general election. We have to get behind that person. No matter the small disagreements you have for what they stand for. They stand for a whole lot more than what a Republican does.

Please do not give up on the hope for the future of the United States. I don't think John Edwards would want that either.

58. a voice of reason and hope is much needed now
Post more often, please! You hit the perfect note of disappointment and refusal to give up on ending, as you say, the Republicans' reign of terror.

I don't know whether I'm in the minority on feeling this way--I can't begin to guess at how many "I won't be able to bring myself to vote if it's not Edwards" posts I've read over the past weeks and months, and I certainly respect that choice--but although our current candidates leave much to be desired, the key feature they both have in common is that they are not John McCain or Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee. That in itself is enough to keep me involved with the Democratic party. After seven (by then, eight) years of Bush as president, I would vote for a yellow dog if it had (D) after its name.

62. Thanks for the encouragement!
This can be a scary place to wade into!

I am in total agreement about voting for a Democrat even though they aren't the one you wanted. All I have to do is think about what a Republican would do in their place and the petty disagreement about Hillary's healthcare or her Iraq policy that I have seem like nothing. Now is the time to stop beating each other up and unite for the future of our country. I am at a loss when people say they will not vote in November. How can you look at what is going on now and what will happen and not want to have your voice heard? Now is not the time to be stubborn and indignant.
