Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 03:47 PM by Mike03
I am SO pissed. After all of that hand-wringing, self-doubt and second-guessing myself, I voted for John Edwards by absentee ballot instead of Obama. I regretted this decision (for tactical reasons), but today I REALLY regret it because--in spite of the fact that my support for Edwards is unequivocal--it is in fact a wasted vote.

Is it too late to remedy this situation?

1. I do believe it would be too late

You can call but I'm pretty sure most states once it's postmarked it's done.

3. I don't think you can recall it
but it was for this reason I kept it on my dining room table until today. In California you can walk your ballot in on election day.

I don't think you wasted your vote though. It will still send a message and if he has more than 15% still give him delegates.

4. May I ask your reason for voting absentee?
I can understand if you are unable to get to the polls because of age or disability, or if you will be out of town (or are a student who wants to vote in your home state). But otherwise, this is why it is a good idea to go to the polls in person. You never know what will happen before an election.

I was surprised at the number who had voted early or absentee in Florida--some as early as Dec. 15 (before Iowa even). I think the results might have been somewhat different if that hadn't occurred.

5. I can answer why I vote absentee. I might die before the election and then who knows
who my vote would go to if I didn't vote absentee.

6. My preference is to go to the polls in person, because I love

the excitement of election days, but this past year I signed up to vote by absentee ballot because I thought it was better to vote this way and leave a paper trail, and to physically put my vote down on a piece of paper rather than punch it into a computer. (Ray Taliafero, the talk show host, is always saying how important it is to vote by absentee ballot, for what that is worth.)

This was actually the first time I've voted absentee. I thought I was doing the right thing, in light of the apparent caprice of these damned machines.

8. Don't worry about it
Statistically, your vote has no weight.

12. My county's pushing vote-by-mail
partially for financial reasons (they don't want to invest in more voting machines until the state makes up its mind). I've gone to permanent vote by mail for a number of reasons:
-I travel a lot, especially in fall. I've been away for about half the November elections in the last 20 years. In 2004, I was a tad paranoid and expected there to be some sort of "crisis" necessitating a shut-down of all transportation just before election day, leaving me in another state.
-I typically do volunteer work on Tuesdays in another county. I don't want to risk getting back after the polls in my own county close.
-I can ignore all the electioneering after I've read the state voter's guide and made my decision. Like the pro-Prop. 93 ad on the radio right now.

I sent my ballot for the 5th in 2 weeks ago.

15. Here in CA
all the ballots have numbers on them so even though they are anonymous if you have stub your ballot probably could be tracked down.

9. I don't like the idea of early voting...
Absentee voting, is all right, of course, but it's things like this that turn me off to early voting. So much can happen between the time you drop off your vote in the mail and the day of the actual Primary or general election.

Everyone deserves the right to vote. But not the right to vote and vote and vote.

It should be everyone gets one shot. So everyone should consider that when voting or not vote early.

Live and learn.

11. Not possible in Florida
Once you sign it and mail it, you've officially voted. You can't change it anymore than voting at 8am and coming back at 3pm (same thing; the election hasn't finished).

13. NJ will give you a new ballot
A judge in New Jersey just ruled that voters in this situation will be allowed to request new ballots. If you're in this situation and live in NJ, call your elections clerk.

14. That's why I don't vote that way anymore
I did once and regretted it cause my candidate dropped out. Things change so fast, more information on initiatives often comes out at the end and I want to have the latest info when I vote. Yeah I learned the hard way too, anymore I don't vote till last.

17. A card laid is a card played.
No. Sorry. You're stuck with your vote.

Be glad you didn't have a provisional ballot. They sometimes never get counted.
