All forms of public transportation should be heavily if not fully subsidized..
and/or tax free. We should be taxing the HELL out of non-renewable fuels and energy. This seems like a no-brainer to me. What am I missing?

1. You're missing the fact that the monied interests aren't invested in public infrastructure...
...so they're in a poor position to profit from a switch
from private transportation to public transportation.

2. I am proud to say our city's public transport
is heavily subsidized by both the city and the county. Rates have not increased in several years and they've added numerous bus lines. Bus fare is $1.00 one way but you can get 1 transfer with the fare. Seniors 62-65 and handicapped persons ride for 35 cents Monday through Saturday and ride free on Sundays. Seniors 65 and older ride free every day. You can get a monthly bus pass for $35.00 for unlimited rides. (Can you tell I use public transportation a lot?) It's a GREAT deal!

5. If we had public transportation we probably wouldn't own but one auto rather than two
and that one would set under the carport most of the time. I would love to have public transportation, as a matter of fact right now If I could hop a bus and ride to the store I could buy a couple things that would make my project today go easier and quicker but I just can't justify the cost of driving there and back in our 15 mpg f150 so I'll make do. By my driving the cost of those two items would go from costing 3 at most 4 bucks to at least 10 maybe 12.

7. That's great to hear..
here in D.C., I take public transportation to and from work, it's about a 15 mile trip one way and costs almost $5. Some people in this area are spending up to $20 a day on public transportation. Luckily, my employer subsidizes it, but many private employers here in this area do not. It's more a financial burden than it should be for people who are doing the right thing.

8. I used to do the same
when I lived in NOVA and Prince Georges County and commuted into DC.

I think it cost me about $3.50/day to ride into town in the mid to late 80s. Still that was a lot for someone only making about 18K/year.
