SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate's great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.

Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president.

Romney's great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.

Romney's great-grandmother, Hannah Hood Hill, was the daughter of polygamists. She wrote vividly in her autobiography about how she ``used to walk the floor and shed tears of sorrow'' over her own husband's multiple marriages.

3. I, also, hate to see this used in politics. There are a great many
Mormons in my community and I'm certain every one of them has a polygamous backgound in their ancestry. It's a given around here.

7. that is the point. it isnt against him. it is back in the 1800's. it has NOTHING
to do with romney. when he uses religion, go after what HE uses, not what a great great grandfather did. that is four generations.

8. If he uses religion and "family values" we can go after his family's "family values"
he is a dangerous candidate and we should use whatever is TRUE and at our disposal.

13. Do you have any evidence
that Romney is a polygamist?

This is a dumb issue - of course a Mormon would likely have polygamous ancestors.

I'd hate to think that what MY ancestors did would be held against me.

18. I was asking
about your "apple not falling far from the tree" comment, which implies Mitt has polygamous tendencies, presumably inherited ones.

Go use it all you want - I think it's foolish and petty, but have fun.

24. Let it go

.....who cares.

If you found out that your great-grandmother was a hooker, do you think it should effect any job you wish to have? Does it matter? Move on....worry about the issues not his genealogy.

Cheers

When will we have a political candidate who refuses to tell the public whether or not he practices a religion and also admits to having had affairs, touring with not only his wife but his extramarital lover on the campaign stump? When will we have a candidate who refuses to play these "People Magazine" infotainment games and tells the people he's there to talk about the issues and that who he's sleeping with or how many people he chooses to sleep with is of no consequence to his performance in office? And who or how many people his ancestors might have slept with is even more irrelevant, in my opinion.

17. OMG! Anti-LDS rhetoric! Who would've thunk it?
Seriously, this has nothing to do with Romney. I want to despise the man for his politics, not what his father's father's father did in 1897.

This is anti-religious bigotry. People can criticize religion on the merits, but when you make shit up or play to stereotypes that's the same bigotry as someone hating blacks or gays.

20. So Barack Obama's distant relation to Jefferson Davis is fair game as well?

Some have said Romney's ancestor's actions should be used if Romney talks about "family values." Should Obama's be fair game if he talks about slavery or national unity?

side (19th century), and if I'm not a card-carrying EVIL LIBERAL I don't know who is.

This the THE WRONG REASON to go after Romney. A better approach would be to question his ties to a church that is actively engaging in attempts to create and perpetuate a THEOCRACY right here in America in the past 100 years. The Mormon chruch is extremely RW fascist, even if they are questionably christofascist (ask the fundies).

I wouldn't be surprised if Romney was a secret Dominionist.
