6. Only survivor of the Holocaust to have served in Congress
I didn't know that either, sorry to say. I know little about him, it seems. Perhaps some of you Californians could fill me in on what type of man he was.

7. His announcement of his illness earlier this year,
http://www.lantos.org/index.php

Snip from website:

Washington, DC, January 2, 2008 — Congressman Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo, San Francisco) today released the following statement:

"Routine medical tests have revealed that I have cancer of the esophagus. In view of this development and the treatment it will require, I will not seek re-election.

"It is only in the United States that a penniless survivor of the Holocaust and a fighter in the anti-Nazi underground could have received an education, raised a family, and had the privilege of serving the last three decades of his life as a Member of Congress. I will never be able to express fully my profoundly felt gratitude to this great country.

8. He had cancer of the esophagus. Hopefully we won't see any kicking of the guy now that he's dead
here, like we did awhile back when he announced his retirement.

Lantos was a fascinating fellow. He wasn't perfect, but he did more good than ill, and not everyone can say that in life.

16. See here. The poor old man was "insufficiently liberal" to suit some.

9. A Fascinating Life...A Holocoust Survivor
Rest peacfully, Congressman Lantos...you lived some very interesting and exciting times.

The man was an example of how to survive and thrive. While I didn't always agree with his positions, I always did respect the battles he fought to grow up in a world of hate and fear in World War II Hungary to the halls of power in Washington DC.
