Republicans urged to get back to basics

Marguerite Murer, the former director of presidential correspondence for the White House, has a simple formula for a Republican renaissance: hard work, phone banks and answering the mail.

"Go home," she said, "and call 10 people. If everyone does that, it will make a difference."

Murer, 38, a native of Joliet, was the keynote speaker Sunday night as Kankakee County Republicans gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn for their annual Lincoln Day Dinner.

The event comes after Illinois' recent primary, where Republicans saw a record surge of Democratic voters turning out in the traditional Republican strongholds of Will and Kankakee counties. In Kankakee County's presidential primary 7,484 Republicans voted, compared to 11,283 Democrats. snip

She gave a few other interesting facts about White House calls and packages. They included: "Quilts. We get lots of quilts, and bird feeders, and Bibles, many, many Bibles," she said.

"Jesus, God, Satan and the Easter Bunny" are four of the frequent callers.

Also, people don't realize that gifts to the president belong to the United States, unless the president writes a check for them. President Bush's favorites were a customized chain saw and an unexpected Bulgarian sheepdog.

Kind of confirms what I noticed here when I voted:

Poll worker asked my neighbor in front of me, What party ballot do you want? In a whisper Republican

Kind of like the good old boy was ashamed to say Republican out loud where a lot of people could hear him or something.

Woman asked me and I said in my normal voice, "Democratic please."

I didn't have anything to be ashamed of. But it seemed like my Repig neighbor did.
