Berkeley Considers Rescinding Anti-Marine Letter

BERKELEY (AP) ― City council members are considering easing their stand toward the U.S. Marines after drawing widespread criticism for putting out the unwelcome mat.

Scores of people on both sides of the issue are expected to show up to see the council revisit the question tomorrow.

Last month, council members voted to send a letter to a downtown recruiting station. It advised the Marines that they are not welcome and that if they chosse to stay, they would be doing so as "uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

The letter prompted a storm of disapproval, including threats from Congress and a state lawmaker to cut off state and federal funds destined for Berkeley.
