John McCain's Long Career Of Sleazy Lies, Semi-Affairs & Total Corruption
Wonkette attacks

This whole “presumptive nominee” thing must be serious, because the New York Times just dumped a million-word “investigative report” on how John McCain is the sleaziest sack of scum since, uh, all the other Republicans who already dropped out of the race. Also: Did he have a Dirty Sex Affair with some lobbyist broad who looks suspiciously like his current wife? Let’s find out!

Under a grainy black-and-white 1970s-looking mafia photograph of McCain as he “conferred with his lawyers before testifying in January 1991 before the Senate Ethics Committee regarding his involvement with Charles Keating and the Lincoln Savings and Loan,” the NYT samples from the rich trove of Corrupt McCain evidence and comes up with this pretty good initial batch of sleaze:

Wonkette goes on to name 12 other things to look at besides this affair crap

1. For somebody who is so aware of his own ethics problem, and for somebody
who constantly decries special interest influence in campaigns, he sure is awash in lobbyist dealings, isn't he? That takes cantaloupe-sized cajones, to do it right out in the open while complaining about it and insisting he's above it.

4. I despise his status as a "straight" talker
and being a "maverick" it is total hype propagated by the media

5. He's the opposite of it, you're right. But "war hero POW" cancels it all out.

7. I know Vietnam Vets that feel that "hero' bit is just crap too
A C-SPAN caller this morning, who was a Vietnam vet called it the same way we do.

8. Well, not that I love McCain as a politician
but I deeply respect the fact that he was a POW tortured in a hellhole for years and years, and I do not think it behooves anyone who has not had that experience to judge him. Reminds me of chickenhawk shrub.

9. Pure GOP and Rovian strategy. Same as Rove stating that Bush is brilliant and
has one of the finest political minds he's ever seen. Northeast frat boy as fake cowboy who is scared of horses? AWOL drunk as commander in chief? Clear Skies Initiative? Protect America Act with immunity for criminals?? Fake turkey? Fake commercials as propaganda? Dissenter Tillman as hero? Jessica Lynch? Niger forgery? The list of fakery is tragically long.

Replace your weakness with a fake image of the opposite....go after your opponent's strength by creating a fake image of him as weak. Kerry the war hero became Kerry the coward and McCain the lobbyist's friend became champion of finance reform.

(Also: McCain goes out of his way to appear reserved and calm and almost quiet at times. But from behind the scenes sources we believe he's a seething volcano with a temper. Just what we need in government after the most fake administration in history...more falsehoods and lies)

2. I'm learning (to my horror) that many people have never even heard of the Keating 5.
It's funny how much this intervention for a lobbyist, rides on private jets and all, so closely mirrors his corrupt actions in that case.

I've always been disgusted by his slimy lack of ethics and been amazed that everyone overlooks one of the biggest banking scandals of the late 80s / 90s.

Now, I suddenly realize, they don't have the first clue about "Straight Talking Maverick McCain".

Time to get schooled on this sleazy, power hungry, megalomaniac.

6. Lincoln Savings is all too reminiscent of the current subprime mess.
babylonsister posted a great Wiki refresher on the Keating 5 earlier today; it's a must read.
