right wing glorification of the military & detention camps reminds me of Stalin's Soviet Union
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 05:37 PM by Angry Mollusk
I think one of the stages on the path towards fascism is a glorification of military power- I could be mistaken, but the glorification of the military seems even greater today than it was during the Reagan years- and it just reminds me of how military power was glorfied in the Soviet Union (which resulted in their eventual collapse). Add on top of that the right wing Republican's delight in the existance of gulags where 'detainees' are held without due process and tortured- it reminds me of things Stalin would do- People who compare that tactics of the right wing Republicans to fascist Germany are mistaken- I think they have more ideological similarites with fascist Russia- The gulags are the most disturbing thing of all- People were tortured in the gulags. at least the Russians tried to keep theirs secret, thus implying they knew such things were wrong-but America seems to boast about the existence of its gulags, and it's right and ability to torture people- How much time before American citizens are shipped off to these detention camps to be tortured and/or killed? Wasn't Haliburton contracted to build a number of gulags here in the US? History has shown that any nation that rationaizes the use of torture on it's 'enemies' will eventually find reasons to torture it's own citizens.

In using Orwellian doublespeak, many of the right wing fascist Republicans have argued that these detention centers-and torture- are needed to 'protect freedom'.

3. Between blind nationalism and worship of the military, fascism may be on the horizon
Thanks Bright Eyes, great list, and chilling too-
Just about everyhing on that list has come to pass, from blind flag waving nationalism, to the interweaving of radical Christianity with Bush's policies, to the creation gulags and practice of torture, to the dismantling of the checks and balances, to the suspension of haebeus corpus, to the glorification of the military, etc, etc.....

Let's just hope **IF** Bush leaves the White House, a Democrat can undo all the damage he has wrought..

2. Welcome to DU...
Good post. Freedom, acquired by taking another's freedom away isn't freedom, it's tyranny. What you say about the Soviets is true, at least they had the sense to hide what they are doing. The arrogance of the current administration is beyond belief..
