The New York Times has a little interactive feature that allows you to search for particular words in all Bush SOTU speeches-- it will then chart their frquency, year to year. This is too much fun!

"Iraq?" Mentioned not at all in '01, 34 times in '07. "Freedom"? Not so much. 17 mentions in '06, but only 3 in '07. "Poverty"? Hardly mentioned at all-- but this year gets three mentions. "Human Rights"? Um, sorry, no.

If you come up with anything particularly illuminating, please share!

1. Try "Law Enforcement"
No mention in 2001, 1 in 2002, 1 in 2003, 7 in 2004 (when the Patriot Act was due to expire), no mention in 2005, 1 in 2006, 1 last night. All mentions save one were in reference to fighting terrorism. The one exception was in 2004 when he was pushing to give money to schools for drug tests. Seem like a man who is afraid of Law Enforcement investigating other crimes (like drunk driving, outing CIA agents, cocaine use by rich white guys & insider trading)?

3. I think the Repubs used it in their response to Clinton's 1998 SOTU.
But the actual word may have been "clenis."

;)
