The world was different seven years ago, when Michael Bonderer left Kansas City to erect houses and clinics for the poor in El Salvador.
The 9/11 terrorists hadn’t yet struck. Illegal immigration wasn’t the boiling issue it is now. And maybe, Bonderer contends, a Salvadoran teen wouldn’t have so much trouble getting emergency care in the United States to fix a broken back.
But today a wary U.S. immigration system is keeping treatment out of reach for a girl the humanitarian homebuilder helped raise.
“Here’s the irony,” said Bonderer, voice quickening, temper showing. “I spend seven years down there putting on a pretty good face for the U.S. And now we’ve got a little girl with a busted back who can’t come here for surgery that’s privately funded?
“I’m a little crusty, I realize that. … But this is why people in other countries don’t like us. A little girl with a broken back!”
