Oregon Holds Health Insurance Lottery
Oregon Holds Health Insurance Lottery
By SARAH SKIDMORE Associated Press Writer

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon is conducting a one-of-a-kind lottery, and the prize is health insurance.

The state will start drawing names this week for the chance to enroll in a health care program designed for people not poor enough for Medicaid but too cash-strapped to buy their own insurance.

More than 80,000 people have signed up since registration for the lottery opened in January. Only a few thousand will be chosen for the program.

"It's better than nothing, it's at least a hope," said Shirley Krueger, 61, who signed up the first day.

1. Sadly indicative of modern America.
Even healthcare has become entertainment. "Enter now to win a chance to live for a few more years! First prize winner gets healthcare for life! Second place gets the artery of their choice cleaned! Runners-up will get a tour of the inside of a real hospital, something none of them will ever have seen before! Don't delay, the lucky survivor could be YOUUUUUU!"

5. Yes..we Americans are used to crumbs.
We fight over them since Reagan ruined us for "smaller government". He took our money to make us a "smaller/less wealthy democracy" too.

I'm one of those people who falls through the cracks, my wife has too many "pre-existing" conditions to get insurance but I make too much money for Medicaid.
Just how fucking sick is it to ask people to enter their names in a lottery to see if they can win a chance at seeing a doctor? :puke:

edit: From the article:

"This is such a wonderful opportunity," said Ellen Pinney, director of the Oregon Health Action Campaign. "We've heard absolutely no complaints, just a lot of hope that they are the ones who will be selected."

Yes what a wonderful opportunity, to sit on the edge of your seat for 3 months with 100,000 other people hoping to be one of the 2000 chosen to be treated like a human being. We should all bow down and be thrilled. :eyes:

We demanded National Health Insurance in 2006 and still Congress and the new candidates ignore it. There should be no lottery. If we can wage war all over the world for Empire, the citizens should have health insurance. The will is not there by our politicians.

They ignore our "mandate" of 2006 (by majority of citizens) regarding national health insurance (not just for children or people with none but for all), accountability of fraud and crimes by Congress members...banks, CEOs, etc., our Constitution and Bill of Rights returned, end torture and "off shore" prisons without legal rights, safe borders, no amnesty (no open borders since they have responsibilty to protect it for the people), re-regulation of banks, safe foods, safer drugs, and clean air and water. DA!! None of this has been done. It is not good government rule.

It's like they are crazy just seeking their own power and corporate contributions...jobs. Little they care about their country and its citizens. Democracy has been removed yet they don't act. Fact is they gave this President many of their duties to escape responsibility. So it's not just or VP and President who are lawless but our Congress.

Demand what we asked for two years ago by a majority mandate. The direction of "change" has not "changed".
