I can relate, on some level, to Spitzer
No, I haven't hired prostitutes. But I have broken sexually based laws and lied about my conduct while doing so. As a teacher in Mississippi I signed a morality clause which included the law against consentual sodomy, which I did indeed break. To the extent the public had any right to impose that on me, I broke faith with them. I am not proud of the lies I told. And, to my credit, I didn't break the law within Mississippi, so to that extent I lived up to the letter, if not the spirit, of what I had signed. Given my experience I don't think the personal life of even public figures are all that relevent. I will conceed that to the extent he prosecuted others for the same crime he committed he deserves criticism. But as recently as 2003, I was every bit the criminal as he is. I, for one, think my students aren't harmed by my presence in the classroom nor are the citizens of New York harmed by his presence in Albany.

1. But you are not an officer of the court
nor do you play one on TV.

The first thing I thought of with this is that Spitzer is going to be disbarred, if guilty as charged.

3. Did you sit on the jury of a sodomy trial? Did you find for the prosection?
I see you as much higher than Mr. Spitzer. Where Mr. Spitzer went wrong, in my view, is in prosecuting the very thing he partook of. If he hadn't been so vehement...if he had had nothing to do with that, well then I wouldn't be so vehement in wanting him to resign either.

You are a good person dsc.

6. No I didn't
Presumedly I would have been thrown off such a jury.

11. I don't know the extent to which he prosecuted prostitution
Did he only do so while investigating other mob related crime? Did he prosecute customers and prostitutes or just pimps? I think those become relevent questions.

12. His own words
In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.

“This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,” Mr. Spitzer said at the time. “It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.”

I am saddened, sickened and disheartened by the whole thing. You, dsc, are no Eliot Spitzer.

4. there is no comparison, those laws are unjust and based on backwards morality
Spitzer had the legal right to be with women and marry his wife. even have sex outside the marriage. it's the paying part which is at issue here.

you were not allowed many of thet hings spitzer was allowed.

i have no idea why you would compare your situation to this.

5. actually most states punish sodomy more severely
than prostitution. So to that extent, the people who wrote the laws actually considered it worse.

8. yes, and that's based on bigotry, backwardness etc
in the case of prostitution you can at least say it's to prevent the exploitation of women and others who can be drawn to become prostitutes without other options.

there is no comparison to you and spitzer and i'm surprised you would even try to make one.

17. the theory behind both sets of laws is largely the same
Maybe now the laws purpose is a bit different, but not originally.

14. I'm sorry, but I still can't grasp why a consenting adult shouldn't be allowed to pay another
consenting adult for sex.

I don't get why my tax dollars need to go to "fight" such a thing.

16. i agree in some ways, but Spitzer was one of those who went after Prostitution
and those who did the same thing he has now done.

20. Agreed- They hypocrisy is relevant, just as Bush being Gov. of a state w/draconian drug sentences
Edited on Mon Mar-10-08 10:44 PM by impeachdubya
makes whether or not he did cocaine more relevant.

Eventually, though, I hope we as a society will grow up enough to get to a place where we realize we really have more important things to do than spend our time and resources trying to keep consenting adults from making choices we may not agree with.

7. Laws regarding consensual non-predatory sexual behavior between adults are
victorian and puritanical. Not to mention an invasion of privacy and immoral.

13. The hypocrisy involved is what bugs me, in that he prosecuted others for it.
Frankly, I think all these laws telling consenting adults what they can do with their own bodies need to go. If consenting adults want to pay each other for sex, fine. If consenting adults want to put forbidden chemicals in their bodies, as long as they're not getting behind the wheel or otherwise endangering other people, I have trouble seeing why law enforcement should be involved. We, as a society, need to stop trying to legislate morality for consenting adults.
