Karl Rove...speculated about a permanent political realignment in favor of the GOP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gop

Just some thoughts on the Good Old Boys...I mean the Grand Old Party...then and now.

"Founded in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and modernizers, the Republican Party rose to prominence with the election of Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president. The party presided over the American Civil War and Reconstruction and was harried by internal factions and scandals towards the end of the 19th century."

1. He's not the only one - circa 2002-2004 they thought liberals were goners
And of course there are a lot of people on this board who agreed with them. Hell, many still do.

3. They're entering a similar period now
because that party has always been a rich man's party, cobbled together with whomever the rich think they can fool into thinking their narrow agenda will be pursued. The religious right is waking up, even with the bribes of faith based tax money to prominent preachers, to the fact that they've been used for the past 28 years and that the rich aren't the least bit interested in pushing their narrow social agenda.

The one thing conservative people hate the most is change because they find change, even changing their minds, inconvenient. They think political movements and bubble markets will both last forever. They're always the most surprised when they don't.

5. Not always ...

I dispute this. The Democrats used to be the party of the rich. The Republicans were the progressive party up until Taft. Then they were BOTH the party of the rich until Roosevelt. At that point they were the party of the poor white man. Then in the 60s, they became the party of labor and minorities while the Republicans were the party of the rich, the bigoted and the wacked out fundamentalists.

That's pretty much where we are today.

4. There will be a realignment for the GOP, just not one in their favor
but I do hope Rove is correct about him getting indicted by year end.

6. The centrists are losing their battle ...

I think the centrists have held a long battle to return the party back to a few of it's progressive messages. Those messages are not too unlike that of the DLC. Unfortunately, big business and the fundagelicals are running the GOP.

I suspect they are going to get their clock cleaned in this election. Further, I think the fundagelicals will finally take over for real with top up campaigns like that of Mike Huckabee.

Joe Lieberman might look like a lonely man right now. But I suspect a coalition of dejected DLCers (like Hillary) and moderate repukes (like McCain) backed by big corporate money may be in the offing soon. Official party policy on abortion ... no policy, run the "flavor" that will win where it will win. Keep free trade at all costs.
