Remember Edwards' house charade was also started by Drudge
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 12:12 PM by Nutmegger
Just reminding everyone. They're doing it to Gore now.

This is a snip from "How I Fell For a Right-Wing Smear".

Yesterday, a reader emailed me an article discussing the Edwards' new home from the Carolina Journal. The Carolina Journal is a publication put out by the John Locke Foundation, a local right-wing think tank the North Carolina blogger warned me about. From there, the story, or non-story rather, was passed to the Drudge Report where it was widely linked. And then someone emailed it to me, professing to really really like John Edwards but having nagging doubts because of things like this.

1. Gore Responds to Drudge's Latest Hysterics
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/26/gore-responds-to-drudge/

Responding to Drudge’s attack, Vice President Gore’s office told ThinkProgress:

1) Gore’s family has taken numerous steps to reduce the carbon footprint of their private residence, including signing up for 100 percent green power through Green Power Switch, installing solar panels, and using compact fluorescent bulbs and other energy saving technology.

2) Gore has had a consistent position of purchasing carbon offsets to offset the family’s carbon footprint — a concept the right-wing fails to understand. Gore’s office explains:

What Mr. Gore has asked is that every family calculate their carbon footprint and try to reduce it as much as possible. Once they have done so, he then advocates that they purchase offsets, as the Gore’s do, to bring their footprint down to zero.

2. A lot of the anti-Hillary stories started there, too. Too many DUers
fail to consider the source.

With Hillary, for instance, Drudge would report something like "Hillary takes on video game makers!" when she was handling a minor technical issue on a specific game, or "Hillary supports flag burn ban!" when she was actually trying to head off a flag burning ban. Another tactic is to use old stories to condemn current positions. For instance, early on Hillary condemned Bush for his handling of the Iraq invasion, and like others, criticized him for not sending enough troops. So later, when she said the IWR was a mistake and we needed to start withdrawing troops, Drudge's angle was "Hillary wanted more troops in Iraq, and now flip-flops and wants fewer!"

Then Edwards, Now he's doing it to Gore, again. I'm sure he's aimed at Obama, too.

Read David Brock's book "Blinded by the Right" or the collection of essays in "Into the Buzzsaw" for some insight into how the media operates,

Read critically, especially ANYTHING that attacks ANY Democrat.

3. It was started by the Carolina Journal and continued by Drudge
But are the facts of the story wrong? The newly built Edwards home is 10,000 square feet. It also has a newly built barn and silo and a heated walkway. Is any of that wrong, in spite of the source?

Gore, at least, has responded, although he does not say what his electric bill and gas bills are. Just curious. He may have huge bills simply by having a huge house, but he can reduce them further by closing off rooms. I only heat about half of my ground floor and don't directly heat my upstairs. I do not know how many people he has at his house though, or how much they use various rooms. I cannot really lecture Gore since I did not clean my furnace filter until after Gore suggested it on Oprah.

5. The problem is that Drudge is intentionally trying to mislead
The cost of his electric bill is not equal to the amounts of carbon emissions that cause global warming.

His electricity comes from green sources. He buys carbon offsets and his carbon footprint is very low.

6. And Edwards did not respond?
Elizabeth Edwards wrote about it. I don't have the link handy but I'm sure you seen it. I'm also sure you believe she was doing it for "PR purposes".

And the Carolina Journal may have started it but it was Drudge who got everyone into a tizzy.

9. all I saw was something blogged about them switching to CFCs
The size of the house, and design were considered no big deal. I did not see anything refuted either about its size or newness. She said something like 'the two Americas is about helping the poor, not restricting the rich'.

That's not PR, but a seemingly poor understanding of our problems. The poor become poor in large part because of the rich grabbing it all so they can build or buy their own McMansions and whatever else their self indulgence is. Plus, they are a little bit late to the CFC party since I have been using them for at least 10 years. But better late than never.

4. But it's still Edwards' house, right?
It wasn't someone else's house, was it?
