David Paterson Admits To Past Infidelity
By Eric Kleefeld - March 17, 2008, 10:53PM

New York's new Governor David Paterson made a startling admission to the New York Daily News in an interview this past weekend, just being published tonight. Starting in 1999, Paterson had an extra-marital affair lasting about two or three years, and his wife Michelle also had an affair during this period in their marriage.

"This was a marriage that appeared to be going sour at one point," Paterson said. "But I went to counseling and we decided we wanted to make it work. Michelle is well aware of what went on."

It's an amazing confession from a governor who has taken office because of a sex scandal ruining his predecessor — though in this case his admitted past infidelity would seem to pale in comparison to Eliot Spitzer's habitual use of outrageously top-dollar prostitutes. It was probably a good idea to get it out of the way as soon as possible, so he can get on with governing the state.

1. No big problem. He admitted that he cheated and overcame it.

3. It IS a problem, because the press will MAKE it a problem.
While I don't really care what a man does in his private life, it doesn't change the fact many do. This story will be all over the headlines, especially since he's replacing a man who had a sex scandal of his own. Though there is nothing illegal here, it does not look good for him, New York, or Democrats.

9. Infidelity and prostitution are completely different.
Especially when it took place 10 years ago and they openly admit it. There's no story to be had if nobody is hiding it from the press. Just like Obama's supposed drug scandal.

12. Infidelity happens so often with both sexes that it should be
something we all expect, not a cause to get freaked out.

It's why the press would ignore it unless it was with an international spy back in the good old days when we had a real press.

People will always cheat because we are simply not programmed to be a monogamous species. Other so called monogamous species have also been found to cheat at a rate approaching ours.

Good for them for withstanding it. Good for them for going to counseling to find out what the real problem was and then dealing with it.

However, I'm sick of the whole hypocritical attitude toward sexual matters.

Sex is something most of us will do and some of us will do it with the "wrong" partner. It's high time to stop being so goddamned bluenosed over it.

11. Oh for God sake people, get over it! There's more cheating
going on than anyone will ever admit! I worked for 40 years and I can tell you there were only 2 people that DIDN'T have extramarital affairs. America needs to accept it and get on with the important things!

16. you have to be kidding....
even though he is reformed....you would think that what he did was no different than what Spitzer did. Double standard. I thought I was going to like this guy....but now I am wondering. These people need to be "vetted" way before they hit office....

23. He will get a pass because he is a friend of Joe Bruno, the scumbag
head of the Rethuglican Party in NY State, and because he wasn't boinking a whore for money. Besides, the Booshies got Spitzer, he was going after the corporations and tried to reform the banking laws in NY State. The dirty deed is done.

Nothing to see here, just join Vitter and Craig in "repenting" for their sins and everything will be ok.

30. Not while in office. He spent the first 40 years of his life being a coke
snorting drunken whore. And then he found 'God' (not MY GOD by any means) and was appointed pResident by the Supreme Court.

How's that for a record?

28. Read a little further
The common sense response to this comes in the first response in the thread to the news story:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/03/david_paterson_admits_to_past.php

"Startling?" "Amazing?" What is wrong with you? Hyperbole is appropriate because Drudge deems it so?

There is nothing remotely "startling" about a couple going through a difficult time in their marriage, seeing other people, and then deciding to stay together.

Get over yourself."

29. It's playing out in NY so far that they BOTH had affairs during a rocky part in their marriage. They
decided to try to make the marriage work for their kids. As the article says, they did seek counseling. Not much different than other couples.

32. Well, it seems that they had an open marriage for a while
They both slept with other people, obviously a choice they both made....NOT 'cheating'.

Now they have reconciled.

Only in America would this be portrayed as some kind of moral debacle or something that is 'unusual'

33. Breaking Political Scandal: America is Going Down the Tubes!
Dollar's collapsing, banks are failing! We're spending $3 billion a week on a war that has no end in sight. The military is spent. Our civil liberties are being trampled by a lawless corrupt dictator.

But that's not important now. That is old news. We need to focus our national attention on the long ago sexual infidelities of NY's new governor.
:banghead:
We're doomed.

36. I like the way Paterson and his wife handled this
Although I honestly do think this is NONE of my business (or yours), I think the Patersons were smart to put this information out themselves instead of dealing with the potential "caught ya!" moment in the media.

They had marital problems. They both had affairs. They made the decision to work it out. That's not easy to go through so kudos to them for working on a conclusion that works best for them.

37. They BOTH had affairs, all marriages have issues
Not all spouses end up having affairs with each other but all marraiges hit rough patches and I feel David Paterson handled this in a very adult way by telling the press right away. I'm gald they worked it out and have stayed together.
