General question. Should Catholics candidates repudiate the views of their priests or the pope?
There has been a great deal of talk this week regarding Pastor Wright and Obama and what steps Obama has taken or not taken. But as a general view should any candidate repudiate the views of their church if they say an imflammatory statement? The Pope and many Catholic Bishops and Cardinals often say things that I as a Catholic slap my head at. And we all know the kinds of imflamatory statements many fundie preachers make from their pulpits. Why aren't we seeing more talk in the media about candidates of all religions repudiating or disassociating themselves with pastors who say stupid or imflamatory things.

1. Ha! Mother Rome would excommunicate them
and they could then kiss their political careers goodbye, even if they acted and joined another church before those old men in dresses in Rome announced the excommunication.

The church wants to force its will politically, but it's a one way street.

John Kerry, for instance, is pro-choice, and yet his church is anti-choice. isn't that repudiating that idea?

4. If this were true, there would be no Catholics. They would have all
left in disgust after all those nasty priests were outed for pedophilia. I don't remember the m$m punishing Catholics though.

7. After the Wright fiasco I think catholics need to repudiate religion
Sister Perpetual Agony, and the rest of her cohorts over 12 years planted the seed of bigotry in me as a kid. They kept hammering home the concept that "all non-catholics will burn in the flames of hell for eternity." I remember classmates asking; "Does that apply to Jews, to protestants", pick you religion. And the answer was YES, to hell they go. From that teaching I remember actually looking down, so to speak, on any non-catholics.

I don't believe in imaginary sky-people or the world of make believe gods anymore, but I consider the catholic teachings of bigotry to be a form of child abuse.

I'm presently in a cat fight with the archdiocese of Boston DEMANDING excommunication from that cult, solely to piss off those child-raping perverts.

And to directly answer your question, Catholics candidates should repudiate the views of their priests or that ex-Nazi pope.

9. Nope. Nor should Obama be held to the views of his pastor
after he's shared his own, differing ones.

I'm interested in what the candidates do and say, not some strange game of gotcha/degrees of separation.

11. It appears they do.
Look at Kerry and the Kennedies. They certainly do not follow Catholic doctrine.

12. Is this the religious test ? What about the First Amendment?
I believe in an America that is not Protestant, Catholic, or Jew. I want a President whose public acts are responsible to all groups and and is not obligated to any of them. It's none of my affair how that person prays or worships their God, or if he chooses not to worship at all. What is important is will that person Preserve, Protect, and Defend the Constitution against All enemies foreign and domestic. Will that person uphold the law or break it!
