Not so 'hilarious': Dumping ice water on a 90-year-old

A Cloquet, Minn., teenager told police that he found it so funny when he dumped a pitcher of ice water on a 90-year-old nursing home resident in June that he returned and did it twice more, in December and again last month.

"Me and (another teenager) were like, this is gonna be hilarious, 'cause this lady was talking to herself and she was yelling and stuff so we threw it on her," the 16-year-old boy told police, describing the first incident.

"She started screaming and freaking out so we thought this was hilariously funny, and we were all talking about it in school and everyone was laughing about it," he said, according to the criminal complaint.

7. Thanks... The lack of any remorse was just so jarring
I was rather ticked off when posting this originally.

5. Does it seem to you all that there is more
of this kind of thing lately than there was in the past? Teens beating up homeless, abusing animals, etc. And if so do you think it might be that so many people no longer live near grandparents and have no exposure to the elderly? or something? I cannot understand this type of behaviour at all. It horrifies me. I know there have always been sociopaths but it just seems like the news is full of this stuff these days.

11. He's a jackbooted thug-in-waiting. Unless some brave soul gets
to him and removes him from the gene pool first.

14. His parents didn't discipline him; he's run amok. There's lots of these
cretins out there. Obviously, I blame it on the parents.

15. Do you think it is the parents
not paying attention to what their children are doing or is it something in the culture we have now?
I just never heard of this kind of stuff when I was growing up. I am fifty but still....

10. I couldn't believe this when I read this is the Strib today
I also couldn't believe the quote from Barbara Averill, spokesperson for Minnesota Health and Housing Alliance who said "Ok, you can see a kid doing something stupid once and being shocked at how stupid it was, but doing it again to frail older people?"

No, Babs, I can see a 3 year old thinking this was funny, but this kid was 16 it's not funny, it's abuse. I'm pleased the County Attorney is going to try and get the little creep certified as an adult.

12. If he did that to an elderly loved one of mine

I doubt that he would do it a second time.

And I know for a fact there would never be a third time.

13. I bet if we looked into his background, we'd find incidents of
torturing animals or playing cruel pranks on other kids.

Kids don't start being nasty sociopaths all of a sudden at age 16.

My mother and stepfather are in an assisted living complex. If some smart-ass brat did this to either of them, my brothers and I would be sorely tempted to find him, cut a hole in the ice of the nearest lake, drop him in, pull him out (we're not murderers), and walk away.
