Hells's Angels turn 60--and a poem by Allen Ginsberg

Hell's Angels motorcycle gang celebrates 60

It's a motorcycle celebration bringing in visitors on tour buses, some of which are coming from overseas. It isn't a new popular bike rally attracting an expected crowd of 4,000 bikers but the 60th anniversary celebration of the Hells Angels…

Organizers of the anniversary celebration are promising the "biggest, baddest" party.

(LM: Here’s a poem by Allen Ginsberg.)

First Party At Ken Kesey's With Hell's Angels

Cool black night thru redwoods
cars parked outside in shade
behind the gate, stars dim above
the ravine, a fire burning by the side
porch and a few tired souls hunched over
in black leather jackets. In the huge
wooden house, a yellow chandelier
at 3 A.M. the blast of loudspeakers
hi-fi Rolling Stones Ray Charles Beatles
Jumping Joe Jackson and twenty youths
dancing to the vibration thru the floor,
a little weed in the bathroom, girls in scarlet
tights, one muscular smooth skinned man
sweating dancing for hours, beer cans
bent littering the yard, a hanged man
sculpture dangling from a high creek branch,
children sleeping softly in their bedroom bunks.
And 4 police cars parked outside the painted
gate, red lights revolving in the leaves. -- December 1965

(LM: Hey, if I can find a reason to use my 1,000th post to quote Allen Ginsberg, darn it, I will use my 1,000th post to quote Allen Ginsberg.)

1. The Angels have mellowed some in their old age
I think there are really two reasons for that. Both are equally important.

The first is that Harleys got expensive as fuck--WAY too expensive to risk the cops confiscating them.

The other? It's hard to be a "lock up your daughters" ruffian, as they once prided themselves on being, when you've got daughters of your own.

I have sold a vast amount of merchandise to Hell's Angels over the years. They know what they want, they don't get a case of the ass if it takes you five minutes to get it, they don't bitch about prices...if I had a steady diet of HAMC customers, I'd be a happy fella.

2. I'll always treasure the night I spent
drinking and talking with Allen at Richard Brautigan's house on Geary.
