John Grisham exposes our corrupt political system
in his latest novel "The Appeal". If you haven't read it, you should. Grisham uses his story-telling talent to show how the monied elite can influence how people vote, control the choices of which candidates they will be able to vote for, control the makeup of a supreme court and outcomes of verdicts. It's a wonderful way to educate the public in how they are being manipulated by the corporate class and how that class is able to control government policy.

I wish more authors and film makers would use their art like this. Maybe we would see some eyes opened.

1. Great book!
I was let down by his previous one - one I just could not get in to.

But this is back to his standards.

And I agree - your point is excellent - the elite can influence well beyond what should be the case.

3. Grisham has his own publisher
therefore his own forum. As you may recall, John Edwards had a very difficult time getting the media to report on his platform. He was virtually silenced by the media. Most people never got a chance to know who he was or what he stood for. What happened to Edwards is an example of the corporate elite controlling and manipulating which candidates we ultimately get to vote for - the very thing Grisham bases his current novel on.

4. The Innocent Man
I'm right in the middle of Grisham's non fiction 'The Innocent Man' and everybody in this country should read it. Our system is a railroad, not a coutroom, a rail road to the prison industry.

6. jesus an unbelievable story
i hope i am not spoiling the story by saying i couldn't believe how many innocent people were on death row just in that one book while he was on the trail of just that one story

i think it must be somehow easier to convict an innocent man because he wouldn't have an alibi set up in advance, he wouldn't have people paid off, he wouldn't have attorneys on retainer

it's unbelievable that to close cases it looks to me that cops just grab whoever is standing around and looks weak (the innocent man of the title had severe mental illness) and just destroy the guy to close a case

jury trials are useless, the system needs to be changed from top to bottom and people who have no training or knowledge of criminal law and the weaknesses of certain kinds of testimony should not be voting on the guilt or innocence of people accused of serious crimes -- or of any crimes really -- it's clear that juries do not have a clue

i believe grisham wrote the book to show that white people, not just black people, are affected by the issue of false convictions, people think this issue only affects minorities, so it's somebody else's problem -- i think we have a society where we just pick anyone and put them on death row as a scapegoat and the real killer is laughing his ass off all the way to the next kill, then we ALL have a big problem frankly

7. I read it and enjoyed it, too. "The Pelican Brief" shows how easily
the Supreme Court can be manipulated by just the right president, the taking out of just the right justices, and just the right amount of money any decision you want can be obtained. The newest set of Supremes are an excellent example of purchasing a court.

Grisham has been saying for years that our legal system is for sale to the highest bidder.
