I think it's distracting at the least. Useless too.

5. You still see the ad
It's designed to look like a search engine, but it's an ad anyway.

15. That is not an Ad...
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 01:57 PM by kirby
That was DU allowing Google to archive the site in order to offload the CPU search intensive operations away from the DU servers. DU search was always dog slow. So now its faster since google is providing it.

If you choose to use it, there are Ads within the search results however.

18. It's an advertising widget from Google
It is an ad, and it serves up ads. Sure, it offloads some of the searches, but it's still an ad. It stores and retains what you search for and delivers ads according to the search terms.

https://www.google.com/adsense/login/en_US/?hl=en_US&sourceid=aso&subid=ww-en_US-et-ads&medium=link&gsessionid=DM6f-W33rGg

AdSense for search allows website publishers to provide Google web and site search to their visitors, and to earn money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages. "And you get paid when people click on these ads."

22. As someone who hates advertising, I wont debate
the meaning of an ad versus a toolbar which provides ads.

What webbrowser do you use normally?

23. I just think it's useless clutter
And the site would be better without it. As for what browser I use, that's irrelevant.

based on the browser you use on potential ways to disable it.

26. In that case...
You might want to investigate writing a script that runs under Greasemonkey and see about removing that from the DU page on your end. Exercise left to the student.

3. Nice, clean blank space was there before
Now there's this red NEW! thingy that looks like an email alert, and the search just duplicates what's already at the top right of my browser, only on my browser the search engine is CLUSTY, which kicks Google's butt.

it wouldn't be so distracting.

you can't search by author anymore. Please advise if I am being Amish here. No offense to the Amish.

In other words, it's not useful, much, and it's distracting too.

And it doesn't spy on you. That's an added bonus.

12. I don't mind the bit at top but am tired of having to click twice to get to old search page
First click on search icon gives me a choice of Google, takes a second click to get to old search page. OK, I know it takes only 5 secs to load (slow internet) but still, I'd like to go directly to old search page options (like author and being able to limit by date).

I have the ads turned off, so they don't bother me.

17. IIRC, this was implemeted to help supplement DU site
expenses. No matter the reason, this site belongs to it's owners who have every right to monetize it. I think they've done a great job keeping these efforts on the down-low.

Also, I notice you don't have a donation star. Perhaps you and others who dislike the Google search feature should donate during every fund drive as I and lots of other DUers do. If your budget is tight, I or others may even donate for you.

28. As long as they don't get rid of the "old" DU search engines, I'm happy.
I like the combined flexibility of being able to search by time frame and being able to search for pre-2004 DU threads.
