Geoff Ogilvy has ended Tiger Woods' winning streak
Tiger's Rally Falls Short at Doral
DORAL, Fla. (March 24) - Geoff Ogilvy has ended Tiger Woods' winning streak. And Ogilvy did it on a course where Woods has looked unstoppable in recent years. Ogilvy won the CA Championship on Monday, saving a round that seemed in peril with a chip-in for par at the 13th hole and going on to claim his second victory in a World Golf Championship event.

I root for Tiger against every golfer except Geoff Ogilvy:

PGA Tour is Pro-Bush, Pro-Iraq

Think Progress has provided a link to an article titled Playing the Patriot Game from the Scottish Herald which describes how the Professional Golf Association Tour is dominated by right-wing, George-Bush-loving Republicans who support the Iraq occupation.

In the Herald article, Selcraig talks about the recent Ryder Cup, which pits European pros against American pros:

But there is still one significant cultural divide that is so sensitive an issue that most players simply avoid addressing it when they are on the others' turf.

Simply put, many Europeans and other international players are put off by the overwhelming number of American PGA Tour players who identify themselves as George Bush-loving Republicans who support the US occupation of Iraq.

Geoff Ogilvy, the affable and well-read Australian who won the US Open and has lived in Arizona with his Texan wife for four years, says: "A lot of their conservative views are way off the map . . . I think George Bush is a bit dangerous. I think the world is scared while he's in office, there's less tolerance of diversity over here people have more blind faith in their government."

Selcraig says that European golfers have indicated that they feel like they'll be crucified in locker rooms if they speak out against Bush or the Iraq occupation.

And apparently it isn't just an unnatural love for Bush politics that drives them - these American golfers are also predominately Christian fundamentalists who hate Democrats..

2. I feel badly this could not have happened on a Sunday afternoon for
Ogilvy. It's been raining so hard off and on down here wasn't even sure they would play today. Tiger had a good run, really surged but too little too late..

3. I support Ogilvy all the time since I read that article
Is there any group of pampered isolated elitist little boys more sheltered from reality than touring golf professionals. Everywhere they go people are paid to kiss their ass. They rub elbows constantly with wealthy white corporate republicans. Most of them are not mensa candidates in the first place so they're gonna be susceptible to the bennies that go along with a slot on the tour.

Plus they have more money than god. Is it any wonder how fuckin stupid they are as a group?

At least one among them is smart enough to see it and brave enough to point it out.

5. Wow, jealous much?
Actually, life on the PGA is very Darwinian. You don't make cuts, you don't get paid. There are no guarantees, unlike MLB, NBA and NFL stars with guaranteed contracts, who can screw up and/or screw off all they want, and still get the big money.

Sure, its a good life, but if you suddenly lose your skills......its over very quickly. (look up Ian Baker-Finch)

6. actually I'm not jealous - I have two things in common with Jack Nicklaus
two arthritic hips. I used to play to a 4 or 5 handicap until my hips started to go at about age 62. Now I can barely walk a round and i really don't like to use a cart. I play 9 holes and shoot 45 and I'm happy to be able to still do that.

You'll notice you never hear any political opinions from the guys who struggle to make the cut every week or go back to q school every year or two. Yes it is Darwinian for them since they lack the endorsement deals that the Woods's the Mickelson's the singh's and some others get and need their piece of the take.

But I still maintain for the big name players it's a sheltered existence.

7. You've pretty much laid out the reasons why I root for
the European team in the Ryder Cup these days!
