FERC approves US's first floating LNG terminal
Nick Snow, Washington Editor

WASHINGTON, DC, Mar. 24 -- The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved Broadwater Energy LLC's application to construct the first floating LNG terminal in the US.

Approval of the project in Long Island Sound after more than 3 years was subject to the operator's adopting more than 80 mitigation measures to enhance safety and security and minimize environmental impacts, FERC said in its Mar. 20 announcement of the decision.

FERC Chairman Joseph T. Kelliher said the commission carefully considered concerns expressed by many citizens about the project. Approval was based on all available scientific facts and was subject to rigorous conditions because the project can meet New York City, Long Island, and Connecticut's projected energy needs safely, securely, and with limited environmental impacts, he said.

John Hritcko, Broadwater senior vice-president, called the action "an important step forward in bringing new, clean, reliable natural gas supplies to a region where prices are volatile and climbing, air quality is a concern, and is located at the end of the pipeline delivery system."

What a crock of shit!

LNG is nothing more than Big Oil's last desperate attempt to cash in before they no longer can.

* It is not clean
* The price of LNG is MORE expensive than natural gas due to the high cost of shipping
* It screws up the air quality
* It screws up the ecosystem
* The LNG tankers should be painted w/a huge bull's eye for terrorists
* The pipeline take 95' swaths of land by eminent domain
* Most of the suppliers come from countries that are not our allies.

But the shittiest thing about LNG is that it has been deadeye dick's baby since the early nineties. (He was the nasty that put the paragraph in the 2005 Energy bill that took authority of the sitings away from the states, leaving the feds as the deciders.)

In my state of Oregon, we have been fighting four proposed terminal sitings. After more than four years, our governor FINALLY has requested a study on the need for this shit.

3. Long Island Sound is rather vulnerable to Nor' Easters.
And NYC is downwind of any problems a floating LNG bomb might have during a nor' easter or a hurricane slightly offshore of Long Island.
