If we lose the GE for President, but the house and senate increase
their majorities enough to make them "veto proof", could we still end the war and get universal health care?

I've pretty much given up hope on the president thing and feel like I need to be paying more attention to increasing the majorities in congress. The discussions around this have escaped my view thus far...or maybe I'm the only one that's feeling this way?

Any thoughts?

1. Correct me if I'm wrong,
but didn't Bush sign into being "laws" (or whatever) saying he could essentially do what he wanted, veto or not?

3. But that's unconstitutional...
...however, with a GOP as POTUS, they can pack the Supremes.

12. That's what, hon?
Unconstitutional is a synonym for Bushco.

Good point about SCOTUS. :scared:

15. What specifically are you talking about?
There have been no laws like that. Please name one if you think there have been.

7. No one will remember a word of it 2 days after the convention
And Republican attempts to keep it in the limelight will prove tireing even to fellow Republicans. In short, its just meaningless scraping. I hope it ends soon myself, and I don't personally give a dam which one of them wins.

16. You must not have been around in 1980.
The battle between Carter and Kennedy did not end 2 days after the convention or ever and we lost the GE.

10. If we had a huge majority in the Senate - even if he pushed
conservative nominees - we wouldn't have to approve - right?

6. Could they / Would they
Two different questions.

They could have stopped funding the war, but opted not to. That should tell you everything you need to know.

14. We have too many blue dog democrats - I think we need to
replace them. Right now - we really aren't a majority if you count them...so I kinda blame them for the continuation of funding.

8. I'm expecting that many will assuage their discomfort with McSame by creating a
nearly solid Blue Congress. They'll vote for him and then vote the rest of the ticket Blue.

9. No
The dems will probably walk away with 55-57 senate seats, which isn't enough to overcome a veto.

And they could end the war now, just filibuster everything until the war is ended. But they aren't going to do that.

17. Assuming that the Democrats unite, yes.
But the Senate and House are full of what I call LIEBERdems, and they will fold at a moments notice.

18. If we loose both houses and win the Presidential race
He will be fighting with his hands tied behind his back, Bill Clinton had to d eal with republicans in both houses, he had to trade off lots of things to get some of the things he wanted passed, we have got to come through with both houses and the presidency no matter who is on the ticket,
