3. My wife is thinking about it
We've attended a self help meeting and seminar, the group really impressed me. I think this procedure should be offered as a premptive resource, there were so many health issues that have been cleared up just through the weight loss, diabetes, heart conditions etc..
There is another procedure called the y en roux where they resize the stomach and make a new connection to the intestene, this is a better procedure in my mind, because you don't have to keep fooling with getting the band adjusted.
If you do it, good luck.

4. A coworker of mine had it done. It was pricey, and insurance did
not cover it.

She has lost over 60 pounds in a matter of months, however she told me it is NOT easy and there are things she simply cannot eat (such as chicken, go figure.) She looks wonderful.

Good luck with your quest!

5. Check out this website...
www.obesityhelp.com

They have forums that discuss all methods of surgical weight loss. I had a Duodenal Switch just over a year ago and have lost over 125 lbs.and couldn't be happier!! Each surgery has it's benefits and drawbacks - do your homework!!! Find out what the side effects are and seriously consider whether you want to live with them. Check out the statistics on excess weight lost and kept off.

Good luck!!

Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 06:35 PM by pitohui
i will freely admit i was scared for him at his age but he had the surgery, lost the weight, and has been traveling all over the country since, it has been about a year but he was really already okay and ready to travel within weeks

i am impressed

#4 -- you are correct, my friend can't eat much anymore, but he lives in vegas and i guess he figured he'd already had his share of buffets and steak dinners at his age, i dunno, it sounds like it would be quite a challenge, but he is happy and healthy and that's what counts

it might be different for a person who is 48, instead of 68, faced with never being able to eat a steak again
