"US Forces Dragged Deeper Into Conflict With Mehdi Army. President Bush has said that the offensive against Shi`ite militias in Iraq is a defining moment in the history of the country. Nearly 200 people are said to have died in Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's operation to force the militants to surrender.
But despite US attacks in Basra, Moqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army still controls large parts of the southern city, and is reported to have taken over the town of Nassiriya further north. U.S. forces said they had killed 48 militants the previous day in gun battles and air strikes across Baghdad, a sign of deeper involvement in a government crackdown on militia loyal to al-Sadr.
Al-Maliki had given the militants until this weekend to lay down their arms, but the deadline's now been extended, and he's offered money to persuade them to give up. Despite the surge in violence, the Prime Minister does have some popular support. Hundreds marched in Kerbala, demanding an end to militant control of parts of Iraq. Critics, though, say al-Maliki has become Iraq's new dictator, and say his future will be shaped by this test of power."
