6. I'll pass on this - State Farm customers get Turbo Tax (online or otherwise) for free (e-file too)
Just go to statefarm.com, set up a login account if you don't have one already, and you can either download the installable version or access a special link to the online version (that's what I did), and the e-filing is free.

12. I normally get a nice healthy return. Not this year.
I lost most of my deductions, so, I can only take the standard deduction this year. And I didn't qualify for a tax credit I thought I'd get.

So, I'll send them $1,400 this week, and next month, they'll send me $1,200 back. I'll be so glad when I'm rich, and don't have to pay taxes.

13. depends on if I'm getting or paying
I always do a rough check in early January, before I even get my W-2, to see if I'm going to be paying or getting a refund. If it's a refund, I file as early as possible. If I'm paying the government, I usually wait until early April to finish and send it in.

I've never understood people being excited about refunds. Yay! The government got an interest-free loan from me!

This year I did state and federal a bit early because I'm house-hunting and need the returns done anyway. This year I owed the feds $3.02, which I think is the most exact it's ever been. Had to pay NY State $89 or so, though.

14. I did 'em, or my CPA did, but I'm not sending it in till next month.
I owe, and I owe big. I have the money, but they're not getting it until I have to give it up. More money for Dimson's war chest and bolonga and peanut butter sandwiches.

19. Your neighbor to the west has you beat.
Here in good ole Blagojevich/Daley land (Illinois) the average is something like 8.25% in the suburbs and a whopping 10.25% in the city-the highest in the nation. Want to rent a car? 20% Rent a hotel room? 15.4%.

Part of it is the abandonment of the federal government, part of it is good ole Chicago style corruption (cough-Stroger-cough), which seems to continue no matter which party's in office.

But this is really the new fate of most regions. Due to the upcoming economic meltdown, which not only hasn't turned the corner but is just gearing up, most regions will either have to raise taxes or cut services.

23. It might have us beat in certain areas of Chicago but not all.
Oh by the way... Marion County and neighboring counties also have an additional 1% tax to help pay for the Colt stadium. They probably have a restaurant tax on any food that is ready to eat. Here we have a restaurant tax to help pay for the Coliseum which will make it 8% to eat anywhere in the county.

Yes, it's called tax shifting. Eliminate one tax and tax something else. The problem is that many will end up paying more so the chosen get to pay less. They make everyone believe their taxes have gone down.

Colts are football, right? So that would piss me off mightily.

I'm glad I don't live near Indy.

I sure as hell won't buy anything when I am in Indy unless absolutely necessary. Won't stay at a motel there either. When I can I buy it in Wisconsin.

She's been taking an accounting course, so this is not a completely unreasonable expectation. We're going to owe money, and I'd rather not think about it.

I'm not going to send it in until the 14th. I'll squeeze every last penny of interest from my own money, thanks.

27. From what I heard, don't you have to have the payment to the government
actually arrive by the 15th? Or there's a penalty? If that's the case, the 14th wouldn't leave much time. On the other hand, if the government owes you, you can file on the 15th. Don't know if this is true or how often they enforce it, but I'd rather not take any chances and send my payment on the 7th.

24. Nope, modest refunds already rolling in.

:)

This was my first year with rental properties and I was worried it would affect my taxes negatively, but it was all good. Buying and renting out property is so freakin cool. Its like owning houses for free.

29. Yes, we never get a refund so we put off paying as long as possible.
We put off knowing about it as long as possible. We have no kids and make too much money to avoid the AMT. If I didn't have to pay rent and a mortgage at the same time I would have put more into 401K or something to lower our taxable income but it isn't possible yet. I hope out house sells so I have money left over each month to save.
