also, ever wonder how a dolphin takes advantage of the bow wave of a ship? The last part of this video is some fascinating underwater footage of Dolphins riding a ships bow wave. Very cool 2:10 video clip from a BBC special from 2003.

6. I remember seeing the special. I watch EVERYTHING Attenborough is involved in.
The man (and the amazing cameraman with him) are the best of the best.

7. Beautiful.
When I first moved to California, I was at Moonlight Beach in Leucadia early one morning and was utterly dumbfounded to see dolphins surfing right alongside the surfers. The sun illuminated them through the waves and it was one of the most beautiful sights I'd ever seen.

Naive newcomer that I was, I practically assaulted one of the surfers coming out of the water to ask him if he'd seen them, too. He laughed and said, "Oh, yeah, they play with us all the time. Welcome to California!"

10. They'll stay in a bow wave for long periods of time .... they seem so happy and peaceful
We saw them often when I was aboard ship in the Navy.

There was the time when there were little babies at play with the adults. It makes you want to cry.

I have also speculated that they develop some sort of affinity to particular ships. I was on a minesweeper. We generally worked the same waters, off the coast of Charleston, SC, to do our exercises. The dolphin were always there. One day, we went into dry dock about 15 miles up a smallish river. The shipyard was actually in brackish water and only minimally tidal. Yet, the morning after we arrived there came a school of dolphin, playing in the water off our bow, almost as if asking us to come out and play. I have no idea if this was the same pod that normally played with us, but it sure seemed so ..... or I am guilty of hopeless flights of romantic fantasy.
