So tell me ... who here hasn't said 'God damn America'
at some time or another. I admit that I have said it on many occasions.

The sins committed these past eight years under the Bushista regime is reason enough alone. But just dig a little further into America's history:

America is and has been the biggest arms dealer

America's support of dictators such as Saddam H. before he became the boogyman :scared: , the Shah of Iran; Ferdinand Marcos, and I don't know how many others.

It would not take any effort at all for God to build a case to damn America for its sins.

19. What part do like best, how we treated native Americans and continue to do so
or how about Black Americans, or how we attacked Mexico so we could steal California from them, how about how we support the tobacco industry and have thirty thousand gun related deaths a year. Maybe it is how everyone must lock everything up at all times because we all know Americans are so very trustworthy..Maybe it is our education system or our Health Care system. I know.. it must be all the extremely violent video games we create for our children...So much to pick from that is worthy of great love of country...

24. Geez
You are a serious Mr. Downer!

Take a look at any country in the world and you can find terrible things about it. Every country of note has had wars, has taken over other lands and people, has engaged in despicable acts at one time or another. What country would pass your test to be worthy of your love?

I have never wished or said God Damn America. I love my country and am proud of it.

And lastly, if you want to bash America, good luck winning in the general election.

27. My problem is that, in my mind, it's all lumped together into one
big cluster fuck. But don't get me completely wrong, I like America too, but neither will I deny that, taken on the whole, we are one arrogant bastard of a nation.

6. Hmmmmm
Well that's one way of looking at it; on the other hand do you want the President of a country to have such a negative attitude towards that country? God Damn America is a pretty strong statement.

17. The nebulous "America"
What does the speaker mean when he says "America"?
What does the listener think when he hears "America"?
What does Bush mena when he says "America"?
What do you mean when you say "America"?

I do not subscribe to the I am America, the identification of the individual with the nation-state. I am that I am.

21. Terry Gross interviewed an African American religious studies scholar on "Fresh Air" on NPR.
It was very interesting. I guess that the transcript can be found at the NPR website. The scholar noted that the emphasis on Wright's comment was on "damn" - a reference to Biblical passages that talk about God "damning" a group because of their behavior. The scholar stressed that Wright was not intending a profanity. He wasn't cursing the U.S. He was noting that the U.S. government's behavior might make it vulnerable to damnation in the eyes of God.

The scholar also noted that Wright's comments have been taken out of the context of their lengthy, multiple hour sermons in which Wright was making complex arguments that are misrepresented by these little sound bites. Wright's overall message in the sermons was one of hope and repudiation of the very attitudes of which he is now being accused.

As a white person, I have repeatedly defended Wright's comments. In the context of his sermons they are right on target.

26. The day Bush unleashed Shock and Awe in America's name
and all over my town cars were driving around with multiple flags flying from their roofs and very few of my fellow citizens expressed any disapproval, I may have uttered GD America. If I had heard Reverand Wright back then, I probably would have cried to hear someone voice my concerns about the wrong America (Bush) was doing. I have no problem whatsoever w/ Obama's church. God bless the truth tellers.

Peace.

28. Not me.
I choose not view my country solely as merely the sum of its pathologies.

It has done many great things and stands for an even greater principle, even if it fails to live up to that principle from time to time.
