CDC Adviser Arrested for Urinal Incident

Monday, January 22, 2007 (01-22) 14:53 PST ATLANTA (AP) --

A prominent public health expert who is a top adviser to federal health agencies was arrested on suspicion of public indecency in an airport men's room.

Dr. Hugh H. Tilson, 67, was arrested Jan. 16 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after a plainclothes police officer said he saw Tilson masturbating at a urinal while watching other men urinate.

Tilson, a part-time faculty member at the University of North Carolina's School of Public Health, has advised the government and industry on health issues and co-authored an influential 1988 report on the future of public health in the U.S.

Tilson recently co-chaired a task force advising the Atlanta-based federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on setting agency priorities and goals. He was visiting Atlanta last week for a senior leadership retreat with CDC Director Julie Gerberding and others.

22. Since he's with the CDC did he wash his hands after?
And I'm thinking he is another totally inappropriate (you're doin' a hecka of a job, Brownie) and incompetent appointment by the *ush regime to undermine one of our great federal watchdogs, the Center for Disease Control. You know people who worry about aids & airborn attacks by terrorists.

28. People are imperfect, so I'm not judging him so much as...
the fact that he is in charge of stuff that really could be vital to our national security and has obviously lost it.

Center for Disease Control isn't like working for Jack-in-the-Box or Tony's Discount Warehouse. This guy is making decisions that could impact millions of lives and he is obviously short on self control or took Viagra and was embarrassed to go to the hospital after the 4 hours were up.

Its just that this administration has made so many appointments of people who do these crazy things.

Well, when we get a DEM President, the appointments will be based on many things, but you can be sure that being capable and able to refrain from public indecency will be high on the list of required qualifications.

I'm all for people recovering, but trust has to be re-earned once it has been burned.

Look at the mess one "dry-drunk" from Texas (sort-of) has caused because all he can do is talk the talk but not walk the walk of making changes from his druggie days.

61. At a urinal while watching other men.. oh & he advises the CDC
YOU feel comfortable having this guy write up recommendations to The Center for Disease Control. An agency that makes life and death decisions for millions of people should pay him a huge salary and he should do whatever he wants and no one should say, "Boo!"

I mean following that logic, I imagine you could say that Michael Brown was just having a meal at a restaurant, what's the big deal? Um, people were dying in New Orleans and he was lollygagging instead of doing his job.

What the big deal is, is that this is another person working for a high level job that has either cracked under the pressure of the years of lies or simply thinks he can do whatever he wants to and nobody will call him on it.

65. Maybe someone who had been in the restroom alerted the airport security.
If it was just a misunderstanding, I doubt he would have been arrested. The whole thing would have been discussed in a private room and no charges pressed.

This kind of is the very definition of being caught with your pants down.

Still, if he had prostrate problems, he might have had to relieve himself. I've heard of that. But then he still should have gone into a stall.

70. This instant conviction attitude is what keeps innocents on don't fly lists and destroys people.
Almost everyone here has already convicted this guy. This kind of "guilty because the cop accused the guy of being icky" attitude is blind obeisance to authority and a despicable attitude. This man's reputation has been destroyed no matter how innocent he may be and people here are piling on. These days, all it takes to destroy a person is to hint at a sex crime, even a victimless sex crime.

The America I believe in considers a person innocent until proven guilty.

There is no difference between the certainty people show here and the certainty that the Bush regime holds that people who get put on the No-Fly list must be kept on there with no recourse and no way to get off (unless they happen to be a Senator from Massachusetts).

73. I'm not convicting him -- I'm saying it is unlikely in this instance..
that he is innocent because in most cases something like this isn't even reported unless it's really obvious. It's like a man reporting spouse abuse. It's my gut feeling. Sorry if that offends you.

I'm not a judge. I don't have to be impartial unless I'm called to the jury. I think the guy has a right to a trial with all the trimmings.

I've posted several possiblities that might be mitigating circumstances and I'd like to see the guy get whatever help he needs.

He could have been manic or having a bad response to viagra or had prostrate problems.

Being an American with an opinion is not the same thing as being the people in charge who make decisions. I'm not a closed minded person and your bizarre attempt to include me in the lunatic zone of the *ush regime leaves me puzzled.

I don't know maybe it's a venus vs mars thing. If you had ever been the victim of a sex crime, you wouldn't be so quick to defend someone who may have even darker secrets to hide.

The guy will get his trial, but he is a well connected person to the pharmaceutical industry and gives to the Republican party, so it is unlikely anyone would have been gunning for him.

Not to sound like Im sticking up for this type of behavior, however this is normal people. Men masturbate with each other all the time - gay and straight men. Men and women have sex in public airports all the time too. You know what though? The police always go after the men because its more visible and it does not hurt that the majority of people are still homophobic. <sarcasm>Must be cracking down on crime if they busted a couple "deviants" going at it in the bathroom, never mind the thousands of heterosexuals that are doing it in the hallways, closets, unisex toilets etc. Its the gay ones we must go after. </sarcasm>

That being said, if you are into public sex, please keep it private and out of view of anyone that is not interested in taking part of it.

80. Lack of consent from the erotic source.
A person should be able to walk into a public restroom and not be the object of someone else's oggling while they fondle themself.

AND the fact that this man is an advisor to the CDC and his judgement or lack thereof could mean life or death for hundreds or millions of people.

Do you want to put YOUR life in his hands?

That guy's whole life just changed. Would could have been an embarrassing experience that he could have been punished for and moved on just became a matter that changed his life and affected the lives of his loved ones.

I just don't think the punishment fits the crime. Shame on the newspaper for that.

77. You realize this man makes recommendations to the CDC.
My life and yours could someday depend on his judgment or lack thereof.

Do you get it?

I think that if he actually did this (some people have insisted on "innocent until proven guilty" even in a person's opinion) the man has a serious problem and should get whatever help he needs. How is allowing him to cover it up with secrecy helpful to him or anyone else?

The choice was his own to be embarrassed. If he'd gone 5 more feet into the restroom he could have closed the door on a stall and no one would have had a problem with it because they wouldn't have known.

I'm sorry, but a man who is supposedly a model of sterling citizenship, who works with college students and gets a lifetime achievement award should have enough common sense not to jack off in a public place.

81. It just doesn't seem fit for national exposure.
And there were a lot of people who argued that Bill Clinton shouldn't be the President because of his "judgement" when it came to getting blowjobs by white house interns. Do you get that? It may not be apples to apples but self control is the bottom line in both situations and neither this guy nor Clinton was able to control their sexual urges and both were caught.

I just don't think that we need to know something like this. I think there are different levels of sexual indecency. Masturbating at a public urinal just doesn't set me off. I think he should be punished if caught but I don't think it deserves the whole country to know about it. Same goes for people in leadership positions who cheat on their spouse. I don't need to know about that either.

Obviously if the guy had been caught fondling someone or if he was in a bathroom at an elementary school jerking off I'd feel differently. But maybe he was looking around at the other guys in the bathroom just to make sure they weren't looking at him.

Who knows. I don't care. I do care that the newspapers seem to have an obsession about things like this and this kind of hype just adds to the phenomena that sex in any form is the worst thing ever.

83. Have you ever lived with a sex addict or deviant?
Stuff like this gets worse not better. If it's merely a misunderstanding, then that's what will come out at trial. If it is his addiction or if he needs help, he'll get it.

I don't have a problem with consensual sex between whomever. Like you I think Hil & Bill were the ones to have to deal with their issue. I still think honesty is the best policy I just think the rethugs overplayed it. We did need to verify as a country that he was taking care of business & we did.

We have a whole sub society of people who think it's just fine to treat other people as objects instead of developing healthy sexual relationships where 2 people make choices together about what to do. A lot of them are high up in the rethug party. To me this talks about an entire mindset that disregards the rights of others.

Bill Clinton had too much sex drive, but he also had a willing partner. It was wrong in a different way, but we examined the record and found that his judgement stood up under scrutiny.

If this person is going to be making recommendations to the CDC a lot of people deserve to know if this was just a fluke or a misunderstanding or if the guy really needs to take time off and deal with personal issues.

If this man is jerking off in public, the people he was looking at to get his johnson up are victims. Men can be freaked out about stuff like that. How do you know the person 2 stalls over hadn't been molested as a child and had a terrible reaction to seeing this kind of thing?

I know guys are generally tough and such, but if you'd ever had someone older than you take advantage even without touching you but making you be part of their sex act without wanting to, you wouldn't call this a victimless crime.

103. Do you think I'm a guy?
Just trying to understand what your last sentence starting with "I know guys are touch and such..." meant.

Believe me, I've had my share of experiences from sexual harrassment in the workplace(too many times to even count) to being physically violated. After what I've seen so many times from men who have a position of authority over women in the workplace, there's little doubt in my mind that Monica Lewinsky was also a victim of being taken advantage of by a powerful man even though she was technically a consenting adult. Anyway, that's another topic, I guess.

My point is that I have plenty of personal experience with being a victim to sexual deviancy and I still don't think this guys mistake needs to be broadcast to the nation. That's because I don't think that kind of punishment fits the crime of masterbating in the airport bathroom. Thats not to say there shouldn't be a punishment. And I'm not going to lose sleep over this one either, to be honest. As I said to another poster, I'm able to see the opposing viewpoints to mine. Really I don't feel strongly that there is a right or wrong opinion on this particular issue.

Yet you took the time to read the post and comment. Something doesn't compute. If a man wants to masturbate in public, he needs to assume that his actions will be reported. He lost whatever right to privacy by performing this act in public.

I don't psychically know before reading a post whether it will be something I will or will not think I needed to know. The fact that I DID read it and had an opinion on it after the fact and shared that opinion doesn't mean you "got me" on anything.
