Spell Nazis----Spell Police--- Spell Nanny's, I hate them!
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 03:19 PM by trumad
Today I spelled a word wrong in my OP. Waist---instead of Waste. Spell check didn't catch it because ---well--- waist is an actual word.

70 percent of the posts in my OP concerned this horrible offense. No opinion about my OP...just an opinion about my misspelled word.

Funny thing about the Spell Nazis..... A good majority of the time when they correct you, they make a grammatical error in their correction.

You know---here's the thing--- I really fucking hate Spell Nazis. The type that get bent like a pretzel when somebody makes a mistake over a misspelled word. Some folks have the decency to PM me to let me know that I made a mistake. That is the classy way to go about it.

Did I say I hate spell Nazis?

Disclaimer: This post is imperfect in it's grammatical structure. Before you attempt to correct said grammatical errors, please purchase a gun, drive to a quiet wooded area, and shoot yourself.

29. Some people learn to learn from their mistakes.
Others just get pissed off, then make dopey posts filled with misspellings and grammatical errors.

Get Firefox...it'll spell check for you while you type. And then when you post dopey screeds against people just because they prefer words spelled correctly, you'll have a heads-up at what's coming.

:hi:

6. It's a way to score cheap points - particularly if they disagree with you
Somewhat like strengthening a weak argument by typing in all caps. WHICH IS EVERY AMERICAN'S GOD GIVEN RIGHT!

Or starting off a post with "Am I the only one . . ."

When you got a weak argument you grab whatever you can get.

167. So you don't like people pointing out your mistakes
but you take some joy in mocking freepers for their mistakes.

Do you not see the double standard there?

That being said, I think many people use grammar as a tool of "oppression." A way to show that they are somehow "smarter" and that usually, in society, goes to class and education. I am an English teacher and I make mistakes on DU because I am often typing during a prep period as a way to just escape for a couple minutes and unwind. I am not going to waste my time doing a full proof read. I do comment on grammar/spelling when it makes the message unreadable of makes the meaning possibly something different than the poster intended.

Apostrophe not needed to indicate possession for third-person pronouns (his, hers, its).

129. I hate those needless apostrophes people tend to put in their post headlines -
I think it's because they have this wrong-headed idea that apostrophes somehow raise the tone (or fancy up) any sentence in which they appear, so they love to spread them around their headlines. (Just like how a lot of mom-and-pop stores throw needless apostrophes into their signage.)

141. Apostrophe Now
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 05:49 PM by Ezlivin
Yeah, I see them used a lot of places they shouldn't. For instance in words like "CDs" or "DVDs" people feel like they must put an apostrophe somewhere, even if possession or contraction is not the issue.

People wonder why I dislike grammatical errors. It's because it derails my reading. I'm reading along and suddenly the sentence stops making sense. She puts the cup in it's place and notices it's cracked. I can't help myself; when I get to the "it's" I automatically break it out into "it is" and then the sentence just dies.

Maybe this is an affliction that only strikes the fiercely literate?

36. I've worked in printing and publishing most of my life . . .
I've seen what devastation a misspelled word or a typo can cause, and nothing on these boards approaches what can happen in the commercial world. So I say, type away -- if the meaning isn't clear, people should question it, but when it's so easy to discern the intent (as it was in your post), no one's interests are served by calling you out on it publicly.

My favorite typo was in a short human interest story written for a local community paper. It was supposed to read that the elderly woman "collects antique clocks," but that's not how it read for 80,000 subscribers. But even then, I didn't receive a tenth of the negative feedback you received this morning, trumad.

119. A panda walks into a cafe.
He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"PANDA. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

Today I spelled a word wrong in my OP - waist instead of waste. (this eliminates your non-sentence)

>Spell check didn't catch it because ---well--- waist is an actual word.
Spell check didn't catch it because, well, waist is an actual word.

>70 percent of the posts in my OP concerned this horrible offense.
Never start sentences with actual digits. Replace 70 with Seventy.

Overall, you're relying too much on using hyphens. Try to cut back. You final draft is due this Friday by 3:00 in the afternoon.

78. Wait, we can bust on freeps for misspellings and bad grammar...
But when someone here does the same thing, they're taking cheap shots?

Like it or not, but in the real world, people are judged by their ability to communicate using proper sentence structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. I mean, one of the big reasons everyone assumed Bush was an idiot (before he proved it) was his inability to communicate.

You may not find it fair, but it's going on. Constantly. And subconsciously.

If you want people to take your opinion seriously, you really can't afford to come across as illiterate.

100. The freeps don't do it by accident
It's what they think to be the way to spell the word in question! Moran, screwn, etc. These loosers do it repeatedly, which shows that it is the case that they don't read enough to realize they even need to look up a word.

On DU it is usually an isolated mistake, so what's the point of going on and on about it?

Some people just have a need to correct other people. That looks worse than occasional typing errors.

I worked for a company where a great number of Spell Nazis worked.

When I first started working, one of my coworkers sent out an email to a great number of people and one of them was an SN.
Instead of addressing the issues in the email, the giant asshole Spell Nazi picked apart the grammar and punctuation.

After that I decided to "watch" that person so I could learn how to be as perfect as she was.

I discovered that this particular Spell Nazi had the attention span of a hamster, regarding anything that she had to do, and that if anything her ridiculous attention to the work of others was probably a way of trying to make herself feel less like an incompetent boob.

152. I'd say, as long as one's post is at least 80% grammatically correct,
With an accuracy of at least 80% in spelling and word usage, then there shouldn't be a problem.

I mean, my guess is that 90%+ of DU members are pretty smart or of above average intelligence. I won't lie though, once there are WAY too many errors, any point a person may be trying to make is slightly diminished-- but I usually don't see that on here.

getting all picked on like that.

Funny thing is, *I* think DU is amazingly tolerant of things like that. So you MUST be being singled out for unfair treatment.

Poor, poor thing.

171. Look at it this way, they are keeping your post kicked and without that
it would sink like a nugget of Ununhexium (atomic weight 289).

You make the fatal mistake of raising issues that we don't like to see, let alone deal with.
