=====================================================================

The Lincoln-Douglas debates, as conducted by ABC:

LINCOLN: In my opinion, slavery will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Excuse me, did an Elijah H. Johnson attend your church?

LINCOLN: When I was a boy in Illinois forty years ago, yes. I think he was a deacon.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Are you aware that he regularly called Kentucky “a land of swine and whores”?

LINCOLN: Sounds right -- his ex-wife was from Kentucky.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Why did you remain in the church after hearing those statements?

LINCOLN: I was eight.

DOUGLAS: This is an important question George -- it's an issue that certainly will be raised in the fall.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Do you denounce him?

LINCOLN: I’d like to get back to the divided house if I may.

- Here are some of their other questions:

Mr. Lincoln do you think the people in the slave-holding states will become "bitter" if you are elected??? If so, how long do think this bitternesss will last??? And by the way, where is your lapel pin???

1. Lincoln would have to explain this comment, were he debating in modern times.
"I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races--that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which will ever forbid the two races living together in terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together, there must be the position of superior and inferior. I am as much as any other man in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

So many people see Lincoln as colorblind, but that simply was not the truth.

3. Yes.
Is this Lincoln playing politics or true belief?

2. Probably should have asked him that bitter question
If he'd known they'd be bitter 150 years later, maybe he'd have bid them good riddance.
