Obama's pin: Guess who wears one?

April 21, 2008

BY ZAY N. SMITH Sun-Times Columnist

News Headline: "Criticize Obama for not wearing flag pin."

News Headline: "Who made an issue out of the flag lapel pin?"

No matter. It is an issue. So let's look at it this way:

• • John McCain, who was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross, does not wear a flag lapel pin.

• • Vice President Dick Cheney, who sought and received five draft deferments because he ''had other priorities,'' wears a flag lapel pin.

OK. Next issue.

3. This "pins" thing is the dumbest issue I've ever heard.
All this nonsense over a cheap trinket that was most likely made by child labor in China anyway.

Only two of the candidates in an early Republicant debate wore them - Mitt R-Money and Crudi Ghouliani.

5. Forced to wear flag pin after 9/11...
I worked for a small section of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare in 2001. Shortly after 9/11, all employees were given a small flag pin and told to wear it at work at all times.
Several people were approached by supervisors and HR types and questioned about why they were not wearing their "mandatory" pin.O ver a week or so, the pin campaign went away.
I think I still have mine in a drawer somewhere.
Yes, it was made in China.

6. No foreign leaders or private citizens of other countries
feel a need to wear their national flag on their lapels.
