I've been interested in this ever since I've heard about it.

John Ashcroft and Mel Carnahan were running against each other for a Senate seat back in 2000.

Mel Carnahan dies in a plane crash.

People go to the polls... and Ashcroft loses to a dead man.

Ever since, Republicans have dismissed this as a sympathy vote.

But is this true, did you or anyone you know vote for Carnahan because of sympathy or was it because that you or someone else thought that a dead man would be preferable to John Ashcroft?

1. NO, it was because voters preferred a dead guy.

2. I do believe that a majority felt better with the dead guy
He was so reactionary, that he even pissed off his base.

What is so crazy is that the rest of the neoconmen are so bad, that Ashcroft actually was the strongest defender of our constitution. My gawd, how far have our standards fallen.

3. Ashcroft was the incumbent
and the voters preferred a dead guy to him anyway.

6. well....
i was planning on voting for carnahan before his plane accident. As far as politicians go, he was a pretty decent man and ashcroft was/is ,well...not a good person.
It has always seemed to me that he was given the job as AG as a sympathy thing because he lost an election to a dead guy!!
