India becoming too expensive for tech firms
Have to find somewhere cheaper to exploit

By Sylvie Barak: Friday, 18 April 2008, 4:49 PM

OUTSOURCING TO INDIA may soon become a thing of the past for small to mid-sized technology firms, due to the increasing costs of rent, salaries and a looming end to the government’s tax holiday.

India’s technology, and especially software industry, has seen spectacular growth over the last few years, tripling in size to reach an astounding $52 billion. But it seems that the bubble may be about to burst.

The slowing US economy is having a big impact on India’s future as a market for outsourced business, with foreign firms tightening their belts as India’s currency strengthens, and operational costs soar, not to mention the fact that skilled manpower is becoming scarcer, and those available are demanding higher salaries. To add to tech companies’ concern, the government tax policy is also looking a bit uncertain.

Sankaran P. Raghunathan, president at the IT SME Association, an umbrella for 3,200 small to mid sized IT firms, told the WSJ's Marketwatch, "operating in India has become extremely difficult because of the government's fiscal policies."

2. india is incredibly inventive --
they weren't -- and aren't going to rely on outside corporations to do what they can do themselves.

what international companies won't come there -- they will simply grow themselves and do a damn fine job of competing with their product.

just another reason why we don't want to lose jobs here -- wages aren't enough of an excuse.

3. None of the projects we ever sent there came back usable.
The appeal of low cost software development usually means you are getting inexperienced developers. Once they get a little experience they left the firms that contract them out and go to find higher wages. The firm then has to hire new blood, rinse and repeat over and over.

5. If the dollar gets much weaker, that will be more than just hyperbole.
Imagine carrying wheelbarrows of dollars (in your debit card) to pay for a loaf of bread at the Pic n' Sav...

7. i read about some indian companies going to Africa
this is no surprise. with outsourcing to India came designer brands like Louis Viutton, Manolo Blahnik and other things that are overpriced and people want to buy. and these things are just as expensive in India as they are here.

i went to this one designer store in India for indian clothes and jewelry. this was an indian business so i was thinking i could get good deals. while it's cheaper than if i got it in America it was still way expensive and i ended up not buying anything from there.

even for those that want to live in india crappy places cost as much or more than places in NY and CA. they are forcing out the people living in slums in some areas to make way for housing for well to do types.

Nielsen layoffs, tax breaks anger Oldsmar officials (TATA)

Published Tuesday, April 15, 2008 11:39 PM

OLDSMAR — City Council members expressed outrage Tuesday over the Nielsen Co.'s plans to eliminate 110 positions at their Oldsmar operation after accepting government money to create jobs.

"To think they have the gall to take taxpayers' money and then lay people off!" said council member Suzanne Vale. "I am so upset."

"It's just incomprehensible to me," agreed council member Janice Miller.

They were responding to news that Nielsen is outsourcing work to India-based Tata Consultancy Services after receiving at least $3.1-million in state and local subsidies mainly to create jobs in Oldsmar.

Tata, one of the world's largest providers of consulting and outsourcing services, has brought in its own workers from India.

And Nielsen, formerly known as Nielsen Media Research, says they have plans to restructure further.

The topic was raised by City Council members at the end of their regular Tuesday meeting.

Some members urged their colleagues to stay calm. Mayor Jim Ronecker reminded the council that outsourcing is a national trend.

"We can't tell them how to run their business," he said.

"No, but we can call a thief a thief when they take the taxpayers' money," said council member Greg Rublee.

9. Eventually, we're going to run out of people to exploit.
Not for some time though. By then, it'll be Mad Max around here, so it won't matter anyhow.

13. wages in India are getting to be comparable to US wages
and I know many who are here on visas who are deciding to go back since the cost of living is cheaper there. They can be wealthy in India instead of just middle class here in the US.

This is just from people I know and work with. I'm not sure of the exact numbers or wages.
