Hey they've OUTDONE us here at DU on flowers to Helen Thomas!!!
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 10:31 PM by calipendence
Here's a story I just came across on another online community raising over $3000 to beat our earlier $2000 of flowers that were given to Helen Thomas for her challenge to the White House on her "Where is Everybody?" comments on torture. Looks like it might get a mention on the Daily Show... Should we step up and "match them"!??

Helen Thomas probes White House on torture; online community sends flowers

"Where is everybody?," asked Thomas, apparently frustrated with lack of attention her colleagues had given the issue. The community of social news site reddit answered "Here we are"; a message they plan to deliver along with several thousand dollars in flowers and other gifts.

Thomas's questions became front-page news on reddit this morning, via a Think Progress blog post that includes a C-SPAN 2 video clip of Thomas during yesterday's press briefing. Noting the president's repeated assertion that the U.S. does not torture, Thomas characterized the authorized interrogation techniques as torture.

...

The bulk of the money was collected through Chipin.com, on a donation page created Micah Fitch, a musician and graphic designer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As of publication, the site registered 400 contributors for a total of $3,125. Fitch also created a wiki, FlowersWiki, for organizing the gift purchases and selecting messages to go with them. A large delivery to the Washington D.C. offices of Thomas's employer Hearst Newspapers is being scheduled for Friday morning.

One redditor claims that a friend who works for The Daily Show is pitching the story to the show's staff.

This is not the first time Thomas has received a high-volume flower gift. In 2006, an e-mail campaign that began on the political website Democratic Underground collected over $2000 and resulted in delivery of 108 dozen roses.

3. As I mentioned during the first campaign, why not collect money for Ms Thomas. . .
to donate to a charity or organization of her choice? What will tens of dozens of flowers accomplish over that of money wisely spent?

Just sayin' . . .

5. It is a political action, not a charitable contribution.
Well, both actually, since Helen sent the flowers on to the victims of the nursing home industry. $2000 or $3000 to some multi-million dollar charity would not make a dent, much less the news wires.

8. It's always better to send flowers to the living. The dead cannot enjoy them. We'll contribute to
Amnesty International or any other organization as a memorial. But for now, flowers will do for her. Blessings from the goddess!

7. I agree.
She may enjoy it once. Maybe twice. But more than that, seems to be overdoing it. Donating to a amnesty international or some other non-profit would send a message to Helen that we actually do get it.

10. Not to mention that we spent all the money on the flowers and vases
and volunteers aranged them. They will probably spend more for pre-arranged flowers.

11. I support anything that shows Helen Thomas how many people love her work.
She's the one person who dares to keep speaking sanity when it is expressly disapproved of.

13. Hey good people...
... don't make this out to be a competition between gift givers. That would be sad indeed.

Let's applaud their action and moreover join them in applauding darling Helen.

I'm off to toss in a few dollars I can't really afford. Join me.

I hate to see this much money spent on flowers.
