Increased demand for beef in India??????????

Anthony Faiola, of the WaPo just told that to MSNBC's airhead of the hour, Contessa Brewer, as one reason why our food prices are up.

Beef?

In India?

Huh?

Maybe?

I know the Christan community is exploding in India, but I doubt that would effect the amount of beef consumed.

It would be an act of heresy for most Indians to eat beef.

With a billion plus people why is that hard to understand?

India has a large muslim population as well as Christian communities. Add to that secularization of the general population and it's not surprising that a country with increasing wealth would be importing a luxury commodity like meat.

They eat beef.

A lot of people raised Hindu don't buy the proscription against beef, especially if they've started to make money.

The combination serves to increase the demand for beef.

That's more people than the total population of the UK and France combined, and almost Spain too (England, France, & Spain have about 160 million combined). That's half the population of the United States.

That kind of puts the population of India into perspective, when you realize that these 153 million Muslims are only about 13 percent of the population overall. We in the west tend to not quite comprehend how massively populous some of these eastern nations truly are. There are as many people in India today as there are in ALL of Europe AND North America COMBINED. Est population of India: 1.16 billion people. Est combined population of all North American and European countries: 1.17 billion.

You can see why an uptick in meat consumption, even among a relatively "small" portion of their population, can impact our markets so heavily.

There are many Muslims in India.
