"MIracle Marine" Dies.... RIP

A Marine sergeant who became a symbol of resilience as he strove to recover from a roadside bomb blast in Iraq that blanketed 97 percent of his body with burns has died, the Defense Department said. He was 22.

Sgt. Merlin German died April 11 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he was continuing treatment for the injuries he suffered in combat on Feb. 22, 2005, the Pentagon said Thursday.

The former turret gunner was dubbed the "Miracle Man" for his determination in facing his wounds, which cost the former saxophone player his fingers and rippled his face with scars. He endured more than 40 surgeries, spent 17 months in a hospital and had to learn to walk again.

1. What did he die from?
No news accounts of his death indicate a cause. I'm not at all knowledgeable about medical stuff, but if he'd survived this long, I would think he'd have had a very good chance of living. Apparently not.

I damned near cried when I found out he was only 22.

6. He was a child
Only 20 when it happened, then. Maybe 19.

There's just so much any human body can take, even when you're young.

Poor, poor kid.

4.  Just awful.
For three years "He endured more than 40 surgeries, spent 17 months in a hospital and had to learn to walk again", and then died at age 22. George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and their bastard friends did this to him. They are solely, and completely, responsible.

5. RIP
Peace to his loved ones and all those who have lost children, moms and dads to this war that did not have to be...our leaders can stop it today, but won't.

Shame on the neocons and those who follow them. Shame on the apathetic and those that turn their faces away and go back to their comfy couches and TVs.

8. Bush should attend his funeral
But he won't of course.

This man, who's apparently become the "Emblem of Resolve" probably won't even rate a mention from the Chimp-in-Chief.

Ironic.

9. a beautiful human being .. courageous, resilient. The kind of person this country needs.
Imagine what he could have accomplished if his life had not been cut short by this senseless war.

All these young lives cut short, they were children just a few years ago. They were just starting their lives as adults. There are no words to describe such losses. I don't know how their families cope with the magnitude of those losses. It is overwhelming.

10. he started a charity for burned children
http://merlinsmiracles.com/

His dream.
Merlin had a vision to help burned children and their families. He wanted the foundation to be named Merlin's Miracles.

After being burned over 97% of his body when a roadside bomb exploded under his vehicle in Iraq while fighting defending our freedom in the Global War on Terror. Merlin was flown to Brooke Army Medical Center where he was not expected to survive, but after over 9 months in the intensive care unit and over 100 surgeries later, he had clearly defied all odds. Merlin became known to everyone as the Miracle Man.

He touched the lives of everyone he met. He taught us strength, courage and unity. He loved children and was very proud uncle to his one year old niece.

The donations would be used to assist burned children and their families to take vacations, trips, outings or anything the families needed to make life a little easier. Merlin loved to travel and knew how difficult it was for him to endure long lines at amusement parks or the frustration of not being able to do certain things because of the heat or being able to go to certain places because of special transportation needed.

It was his dream to be able to grant these families their wishes no matter what the request was. The grants would not be limited to trips and outings but also to help the families in their own homes to make it more comfortable for the burn children.

We are asking for your donation, to make Merlin's dream come true, to grant miracles to burned children and their families.

We will be adding more info on Merlin, and tell you his complete story soon.
