was department head of the state agency for which I gophered back when I was in college 20 years ago. I even remembered stories about him, people would blame him for things that weren't his fault. We had a good laugh talking about mutual acquaintances, people who reported to him.

So when people say it's a small world, they ain't kidding! :rofl:

I'm a court reporter here in Toronto. Years ago, when I'd first started posting on DU, there was a witness on a case from the States. On a smoke break, we started talking politics, then DU - as soon as he/she told me their user name, I recognized it immediately.

Two years ago, someone was replying to an article I'd written. We started PMing each other, and realized that he/she is a lawyer here, and we'd recently worked on a lengthy case together. Although we had replied to each other's posts for over a year, we didn't realize we knew each other "in real life".

5. I think we like to think of this site as a small community, but actually,

there are many thousands of literate, professional people who post here. If you run in those circles, I think it's probably inevitable that you will be crossing paths with people with whom you're already acquainted. It can be fun when it happens, though. :hi:

I lost touch with my best friend (since we were in 3rd grade) after we both moved away from Long Island in our early twenties. She tracked me down through the internet a few years ago, and she and her husband (who now live in NYC) drove up to spend a week with us a few summers ago.

Her husband (her second) is also someone I'd known from grade school and HS - we had such a blast talking about old times and old friends - dragged out our '66 high school yearbook and killed ourselves laughing. Absolutely one of the best weeks of my entire life!
