Sarasota man arrested for carrying Aleve

SARASOTA, Fla. — Turns out those small blue pills in one Sarasota man's car were Aleve after all.

Villis Sanders was stopped in late March for a broken tag light. His license had been suspended because of unpaid traffic tickets. He told police the pills were the over-the-counter medicine for his aching wisdom teeth.

But a drug kit used at the scene said the tablets were amphetamines. Sanders spent 22 hours in jail.

Now prosecutors say the test was wrong. Before trial, prosecutors took the pills to a laboratory where tests showed the pills were Aleve after all.

3. "He feels bad"!?
From the story:
Captain Bill Spitler with the Sarasota Police Department says he feels bad for Sanders because "no one should be arrested for something they did not do."

"Feeling bad" is not enough. There should be an investigation and restitution. Now that this man's been arrested, his fingerprints and DNA are probably on file forever, and I'll bet anytime he tries to get a job, get a credit card, or buy a house, there's going to be a nice little red flag in his file that will make the rest of his life miserable.

"Feeling bad" doesn't fix any of that.

This makes me mad, really mad. It's way too early on a Sunday to be this mad.

10. He's going to feel even worse...
when the lawsuit is filed against the Sarasota P.D., the county, and possibly even the manufacturer of the field test kits.

4. Can he sue? Obviously the equipment is not good.. or is not adequate
for assessing over the counter meds... AND again, this is a waste of time. Drugs are a "social" problem...

6. They need to decertify
all results from this test kit because it has been proven unreliable. How many other people have been improperly imprisoned?

8. Aleve is a gateway drug ....
... Next thing you know, the guy's going to be strung out, laying in the gutter, stealing to support his Robitussin habit.

9. That's fucked up.
And there is no excuse - if on the scene drug kits are that faulty - DON'T USE THEM as a basis for arresting people. If the kits are wrong even once (for whatever reasons), that's one time too many. Being arrested because of a faulty test is not something we should have to tolerate or endure.

What some folks call technicalities, I call rights.

12. I use Aleve (actually generic naproxen) ALL THE TIME.
Between that and the lye for soapmaking, it's only a matter of time before the brownshirts come and ruin MY life.
