Gas tax holiday - silly idea
If they can get $4 per gallon, will the oil companies be nice enough to charge us "only" $3.82, so that we can all get the benefit of the "gas tax holiday" that has been proposed? Or, will the oil companies charge the highest price the market will bear, regardless of the tax rate?

This is economics 101, folks. The gas tax holiday merely gives the oil companies more room raise prices.

1. Why do you hate people that want cheap gas?
No matter how much it costs

4. Assuming Gas Companies Pass On 100% Of Savings . . .
To Americans, which they should do, because it is the right thing to do, then optimistically the 60 day gas tax holiday should result in a savings to a two motorist family of up to $65.00 for the entire family. So, best case scenario, $65.00 for a two motorist family is a nice gesture. Sure, you are not going to use it for a down payment to help overcome the mortgage crisis, but I think many Americans will appreciate the symbolic gesture.

5. They won't pass it along
That will charge the HIGHEST price the market will bear, regardless of what the tax rate is. So a gas tax holiday merely puts that 18 cents into the pockets of the oil companies.

Consumers will sve $0 at best. And, if the ploy increases demand for gasoline, consumers could actualy see higher prices than they otherwise would see.

13. Oh, That Is Just Cynical . . .
Perhaps we should admire Hillary and McCain, since they are not underestimating the patriotism and sense of civic duty that oil company executives might feel in response to the 0.18 gas holiday. For all the talk that Obama is the hope candidate, perhaps Hillary is the true hope candidate based on the faith she is putting on Oil companies to pass on the those savings to the hard working American consumer. I am sure Fox/ABC news will soon run a gazillion stories about how Hillary's sense of hopeful optimism will resonate with "working class whites," which is a phrase that is used more often in the 2008 campaign than the buzzword "synergy" in a corporate seminar.

2. How about a holiday from gas?
How about closing all of the pumps for a few days so we can really save gas. That would be the only real solution.

9. It's a stupid fucking idea.
The tax holiday will not do shit. We will still pay $3.80 a gallon and the gas companies will still rake in billions. Fuck them and fuck the politicians who support this bullshit idea.

11. I heard today that oil company refineries are running at about 85% capacity
down about 10% from where they used to be. Apparently, they're not plowing their enormous windfall profits back into repairing and remediating their oil refineries. I would prefer the candidates to focus on that type of issue, making oil company executives fully explain what's going on and taxing them to the max if they're engaging in shenanigans to maximize profits.

12. This is what should be done.
If they're making $11 billion a quarter, they should be taxed to high hell and forced to pay up or get fined even more.

Hell, I actually think they should be forced to give up one of their $40 billion profits and give every motorist a $2000 refund. That's how you stimulate the god damn economy.

14. Yup, at a huge cost to the treasury
money that pays for things we need like road and bridge repair.

Even if the oil companies laid off though, it would still only amount to about $30 per person this summer. AND it encourages gas use - not something we want to do.

Just a stupid idea.
