Father who shot his own son charged; alcohol and marijuana in his system

A father who accidentally shot and killed his own son is now facing manslaughter charges after authorities found alcohol and marijuana in his system.

Sibley County authorities charged 39 year old Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine on Monday with second degree manslaughter, reckless discharge of a firearm, trespassing, and hunting turkeys without a license.

Klaseus' son Hunter died April 19 after he was hit with shotgun pellets in the neck and torso. The boy was wearing camoflage and hunting with his dad. Hunter Klaseus was about to turn nine years old.

Police found Hunter's father Anthony distraught at the scene. Anthony Klaseus said he had told his son to stay put while he circled to another area to fire at a turkey.

But the boy apparently followed his father, and when Anthony Klaseus heard a snap, he fired at what he thought was a turkey.,

In the criminal complaint, authorities noted that DNR regulations indicate that hunters may only shoot a turkey with a visible beard, indicating they believe Klaseus fired without knowing what he was truly shooting at.

Also in the court documents, authorities say they noticed the smell of alcohol on Klaseus' breath, and a field test indicated a blood alcohol content of .06.
