Tom Monaghan (Domino's) finds moving his rightwing law school is not easy as pie.

Moving school is not easy as pie

Like many magnates with eccentric ambitions and deep pockets before him, Tom Monaghan is finding the undulating landscape of Florida real estate values difficult to navigate. His utopian plan to build a Catholic town, by erecting a university and transplanting his Ann Arbor law school to the Naples area, lurches ahead, even as the still-Ann Arbor-based Ave Maria Law School sheds professors, students and its academic reputation over the planned move.

In the latest setback, the school announced that instead of moving to Ave Maria Town in September 2009, it will move into the 12-acre campus in Naples vacated by Ave Maria University -- a cost-cutting move during a real estate downturn.

The law school's embattled dean recently took a medical leave of absence as the school's ranking fell in U.S. News & World Report, plunging near the bottom of the fourth-and-last law school tier. And judging by appearances, Monaghan's quest to establish a community grounded in Catholic family has devolved into an earthly nightmare of infuriated lawyers, lawsuits and disgruntled alumni. Three of the school's former law professors filed suit last fall against Monaghan and the Ann Arbor law school for firing them.

The fellow who got rich selling pizzas to Ann Arbor kids in dorms is flipping his own life story -- tucked in his dorm room, assets dwindling, trying to deliver one more grand scheme, one more time.

David Brandon and the Domino's Theory
by: David Boyle
Sat Oct 28, 2006 at 16:26:24 PM EDT

(Meet David Brandon, U-M regent and future Republican candidate for statewide office. He's more charming than Engler, Posthumus, or DeVos, but he's just as far to the right. - promoted by Hy Dudgeon)

Of course the "domino theory" was the false idea that once Vietnam fell, every Southeast Asian country would turn commie and swim the Pacific to invade USA. Hmm.
But with our ol' friend David Brandon, CEO of Domino's Pizza, currently running as a Republican candidate for U. of Michigan Regent and also being Dick DeVos' campaign manager, we can theorize from some Domino's experiences...

13. I've boycotted them for years...
...used to have one just around the corner, but my children knew that it was off the list. Which did not really bother any of us because their pizza sucks anyway.

3. Pictures and background........great hopes fading?
Ave Maria, Florida...10 story chapel, university, city.

"AVE MARIA, Fla. — Ten years ago, Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan had a vision to create a "fresh, faithful voice" in Catholic higher education. Now he has both a university and a brand-new town to put it in.
On Saturday, the town will open its doors to the public. Next week, Ave Maria University will move from its cramped quarters in Naples to a permanent campus here, which sits on what used to be about 1,000 acres of tomato plants."

That statement is from July 2007.
