Real stories about regulation.
Inspirations for this thread: Slowpoke cartoon in this thread and the 7.8 earthquake in China

One of the GOP's favorite talking point is that government is bad, only private for-profit corporations can do anything.

Please post your stories about a regulation that did something good for you or someone you know.

I'll start: electrical wiring upgrade and a UL certified outlet strip with circuit breaker protected me and my family just this past week from an electrical fire that never started.

1. Easy. The National Fire Codes that the state enforces
have saved several buildings from burning down and people from being injured or killed.

Example 1:
Oilfield camp electrical wiring shorts starts fire in the third floor ceiling. Fire alarm activates notifying camp personnel, who then use fire extinguishers to knock down fire until fire department arrives to extinguish blaze.

Example 2:
Oilfield camp resident is smoking in room and starts fire. Fire is contained by fire resistant walls and ceiling. Sprinkler head activates, extinguishes fire before fire department arrives.

Example 3:
Vehicle parked at gas station catches fire when owner accidentally spills oil on hot engine. Gas station attendant grabs fire extinguisher and extinguishes fire.

Example 4:
Juice dispenser short and catches fire. Sprinkler head above unit activates and extinguishes fire.

I literally have hundreds of these type of examples from personal experience and all this is government mandated. When people talk that type of noise about deregulation I just point to any number of natural diasters in other countries (not so much Japan) that kill thousands and thousands of people and say the reason we don't have near the damage is because the US enforces more stringent building codes. (REGULATION!)

I make sure oilfield infrastructure stay in one piece and doesn't prematurely erase itself from the face of the earth.

Edit: If you want you can check websites like NFPA.com or Firehouse.com they usally have general statistics about fire safety.
