I won't spoil the surprise by telling HOW many kids they adopted. You'll have to click on the link to find out.

Two fathers
by Dheera Sujan
24-04-2008

Aad and Ron Dissel de Boo tell the story of how they once went to a conference in the USA to talk of their experiences in raising children. Before the spoke, a woman came up to them and told them forthrightly that she didn't agree that homosexuals should be allowed to raise children, because it went against traditional family values.

And then they went on the podium and told their story. Later the same woman came to them in tears to apologise for what she had said earlier. "And then she wrote to us later," says Ron laughing in his booming bass. "She said that she had our photo on a notice board in her office with a sign underneath it that read ‘they opened my heart and my eyes.'"

It's a telling anecdote. And after having spent an afternoon in their company, I know exactly what caused such a radical transformation in that woman. 25 years ago, Aad and Ron decided that they had room in their hearts and in their lives to adopt a child. The Dutch Child Welfare Agency demurred. A young homosexual couple with a child went against the accepted wisdom and in the Christian conservative Holland of that time; there was no precedent for it.

First and second child
1st and 2nd childBut they persisted and eventually, almost as a gesture of ill will, the Agency pointed them towards Huup. He was 14 years old, mentally handicapped, had been severely abused, and had gone through several foster homes. But Aad and Ron took him in and brought him up. Huup, now 27, lives with them still. After Huup had been with them for a while, the couple decided they wanted a younger child, so they went back to the Child Welfare Agency and were again met with protests. Nevertheless, they were then assigned Michel, a mentally disturbed 9-year-old whose parents had kept him chained in a closet for six years. Michel was incontinent, couldn't speak, and needed to be taught the basics, like a giant toddler. (...)

Third child
3rd childWhen Michel was 11, Aad and Ron decided they wanted a baby this time. The Agency reacted predictably: "A baby needs a mum," they were told, but Ron replied: "I can be a mum." And so they got Michael, a one-and-a-half year old, mentally challenged and also with a background of abuse and neglect. When they got him, Michel still hadn't been introduced to solids, so he drank only enormous quantities of milk. His inadequate diet meant that he couldn't really move his lower body, but Aad and Ron fell in love with him immediately. He's now a hulking 17-year-old who also lives at home still. (More at link.)

82. Do you know that shame is the lowest vibe there is?
Trying to shame somebody is pretty damn low.

Read "Power versus Force" and you will find out that the lowest vibe there is, is shame. The second lowest vibe is guilt.

2. What an inpiring couple. Sadly, it's not surprising to me, with the recent influx of
misogynistic posters here who have driven many of the real progressives away, that this story was not posted sooner. They are true role models.

7. I don't sign on often anymore ... just did to K & R this post
My sister and her "spouse" are raising her three grandkids in the Biblebelt of Oklahoma. Lots of obstacles. I admire them so much. They are so dedicated to those kids and want simply the best for them.

I just came back from the ER with my husband and was able to be with him without any problems. We just discussed that it would be horrible to be denied access to your loved one in a situation like that, just because you are a same-sex couple.

People who are against legalizing marriage for same-sex couples are NOT Christian.

31. They're such amazing parents.
It takes energy and love to raise any kid, but they intentionally provided a home to kids with so many exceptional needs. I can't believe anyone wouldn't want kids to have a home like theirs.

They are the anti-Duggars. Whereas the Duggars spend hardly any individual time with their kids (who parent each other) and where they push their kids on the media, Aad and Ron seem to be hands on parents who just want to be a family.

36. Thank You For Sharing That Wonderful Article
I will never understand why gay men and women are seen as incapable of marrying and providing a child with a loving, supportive and wonderful home. This story reminded me of a Jewish gay couple who were featured on an episode of one of the HGTV home remodeling programs. The episode had me in tears because they provided a home for and adopted three African-American children and, it was so obvious, the sun rose and set on those kids. Also, their first concern was that the home and bathroom (which they were remodeling) be child friendly.

For the life of me, I do not get why ANY loving couple who wants to provide a home for children who are in need of one would be denied that right. I thought that what was in the best interests of the kids was what was supposed to be most important, not some religious and heterosexual litmus test to see who had the right to adopt. I hope that one day we can get to the point where it is considered the norm for gays to have the right to adopt and not an anomaly.

46. I met a couple whose son is gay. He and his partner adopted
two African-American children. They are both white.

Grandma and Grandpa were babysitting, and Grandpa was a little uncomfortable telling me the story until he realized I was not one of "those types." The children were gorgeous. Mom got pregnant with the girl first, then called the men a few years later to tell them she was having a boy, and would they like to adopt him.

Hopefully mom will get her act together so that the kids can have some kind of relationship with her as well. It's nice the kids have bio-ties with each other.

65. They have a two parent family.
I think that a two parent family is better for a child. One parent can raise children, but the stress on the parent (and probably also on the children) is greater than people who don't do it can imagine.

When possible, people should try to raise children in a family with more than one adult. A parent and a grandparent makes it better too.

Discipling a child is hard work. It is just exhausting at times. It is important to have a second adult to back you up in this. When one adult just can't be consistent or firm any more -- because he or she is just too tired of saying no, or please, or not now, or later, or whatever, then the other parent can step in. So two, regardless of sex are better than one.

Some single parents can handle the job, but too may of them can't.

71. I raise my glass to them
Bless their hearts for being so willing to take care of these children! Every now and then you hear about a couple like this and I wonder how in the world they do it.

BTW -- "Twee Vaders" made me laugh!

72. Hey... gay DUers...
We know a gay couple... they've been together about 35 years... that never had kids and wanted to. We don't talk much about their orientation or childless status.

Can I send this article to them and not seem paternalistic and condescending?

Ms. Bigmack isn't here and I don't want to commit a Fox Paws.

83. it could be bittersweet for them...
no gay or lesbian could possibly read this wonderful story without being so proud... we ARE loving, unique families, and we are everywhere.

yet your friends may also be very saddened by not being allowed to share their love with a child.

it just depends on whether the pride can overpower the sadness.

74. Hey!
Who the hell are YOU to cast shame on people here?!

I didn't know about Radio Netherlands; now I know!

This is a wonderful story--thank you for posting it--but pity you had a need to taint the positivity of such a story with your authoritarian castigating and "Shame on you" bullshit!

76. Amazing Article
This is a beautiful piece that shows that sometimes families aren't of the cookie cutter variety. Sometimes they're made of people who, while not blood relation, depend upon each other, work together to keep it going, and above all, love each other unconditionally. That's what I've always thought a family was. That's what I got from this piece and it brought tears to my eyes.

From what I've read of the articles on the Duggars, this also seems to be how their particular family works. They just happen to be related.

To be clear: I'm not sure what their offense is and how another loving family earns an "Anti-Duggar" moniker?

Fuck all the right wing idiots who have ill thoughts of these men. Those 2 are angels. That's the only way to describe them.

80. Very cool. I know 2 families that have adopted numerous kids.
1 was a neighbor when I was a child, they must've had 10 kids at a time in their house, of all ages, colors, sizes, which was remarkable since it was a midwest scandihoovian area.

The other is more recently where they also must've had at least 10 kids from the same area on the continent of Africa.

These 2 guys sound way beyond them, and are quite something. Thank you for the wonderful story.
